View Full Version : Can I defer Academy training for later date if I'm accepted?

I'm in a situation where the job I currently am employed ends January of 2009. Its a political job, and I make a very good salary. If I work until my appointment ends, it will obviously add considerably to my retirement, increase my financial cushion, clear away some final debt, and allow me to pursue my dream as a law enforcement officer. (I passed the intial test for Fairfax County, VA PD and am going in for my polygraph in a couple weeks).
I am applying early because I am over 40 years of age, and if there is something wrong physically, want some time to 'fix it' before my deadline comes for employment. Also, if I should fail the polygraph, or something else, want some time to apply to other places.
That being said, can I defer my entrance into the Academy, should I be accepted in the next few monts, to the spring of 09 Class?
Or would I have to go through the whole process again?
Thanks in advance.

No one will know for sure except a recruiter from the department, but as far as my department they would let you defer until the next class but almost two years is a little much. We would make you go through everything again. If you do defer they will definitely make you do the PT test again and medical because so much time has passed, probably the polygraph and an updated background. So ya you would probably have to almost do everything.

Your question is best answered by the agency Personnel or Recruiting Officer. While I personally understand your situation, a department could view it somewhat differently. Not trying to sound discouraging, but presently, I would suggest your focus be on the next, or upcoming phase of the hiring process. Don't put the cart before the horse in other words. Good luck !!

i doubt any department would defer you for 2 years. they'll probably make you go through the whole process again. they would have to do the background/med/psych again since it's 2 years old. your best bet is to just work on your career and apply later. or if you really want the LE job then quit and goto the academy.

Just ask your recruiter/BI.... he or she will tell you. All else is mere speculation.

Well, I just passed my poly. (whew!) and had to defer my physical until September (they only give it once a month)....
So, at this rate, I probably won't have to defer, but I'll ask my BI when he is assigned -- which looks they assign one after the poly.

Did you mean that your current position ends in January 2008, or does it really take that long to get into the academy in Fairfax County? If 2009 was correct and you may not have to defer, that's a loooooooong process.

I don't know how long the process takes, but it seems like they are moving right along. I think a lot depends on how fast you fill out your paperwork. I took the maximum time to send in my initial paperwork because I requested my driving records from the states that I had a license and my school transcripts. After I sent in my paperwork, I was contacted fairly quickly to set-up my poly. It was a seven working days after my poly when I got the call for my physical (not health physical but other physical). I don't know about the rest, though.
My current job ends on January 20, 2009. Its a political job and pays extremely well--as in twice what I would make as starting patrolman (thats including step increases for experience, languages, and college degree). So I want to wait as long as possible.
