Hello,

I've just passed the interview for my local PD and am filling out my background investigation packet I was given. I'm a little concerned though because it's asking for my father's information. My father has been in and out of jail pretty frequently for YEARS for DUII, assaults and most recently he's gotten himself into trouble for identity theft (I don't know how... I don't really talk to him anymore)

I know he wouldn't say anything bad about me if contacted, I'm just worried about his criminal record affecting me.

I have a perfectly clean record (aside from one non-injury accident last december) I'm wondering if my father's history will negitively affect me in getting hired as a police officer?

Thanks,
Capnbob

You're fine.....I know a guy who's Dad is a federal felon.....and both his sons work in Federal LE......

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The main thing is to be totally honest about your father's past with your B/I. In this case, I'm thankful to say that the "Sins Of The Father" do not reflect on the son when it comes time to hire in LE. I have blacksheep in my own family, and have known other deputies who've had their whole family CLAN locked up at one point or another. Meanwhile, that one deputy is the only good apple in a whole barrel of rotten ones. :o Go figure.

Just remember to be honest when it comes time for the truth to come out. ;)

Bob, you don't get to pick your family. Fill out your SPH completely and honestly. Be up front with the Background Investigator concerning your Father. I don't see it as a problem. Good luck.

Like PhilipCal said, you don't get to choose your family.
