I have always had trouble falling asleep. Some time back, my aunt gave me some of her sleeping pills that she uses and that helped. But I decided not to continue with them, since I did not want to get addicted. I still face some sleep problems (not disorder or anything) but don't use anything. I am not at all sure how many I took but my guess is probably less than 5.

I have already mentioned this in the background form. I have my interview with the first BI in the second week of next month.

I have 3 questions:

1) Could this disqualify me? Is this a big deal?
2) After I returned home from the orientation meeting, it occured to me that I might have actually used them 1-2 years before the time period that I mentioned in the questionnaire. Should I call my BI ahead of the interview and tell him about this, or should I not bother with it?
3) This question was asked in a slightly different way with this particular department. The other departments that I am applying with have the more direct question - Illegal use of prescription drugs - yes or no. Will this disqualify me there?

I have already spoken with my BI once (before it occured to me that I might have used them before the time period that I have mentioned in the questionaire). He told me that this was something I should not worry about and it would have a miniscule, if any, effect on my application.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Edit - I just remembered. I also workout 6 days a week and use 100% Gold Standard Whey Protein. I was also using creatine sometime back but have not used it for sometime now (nothing to do with the application, I just did not think it was necessary). Are these problems? Would you classify them as steroids? I don't think they are but how do they show up on the tests?

Rest everything about my application is fine. Clean record, barring a traffic ticket, which I paid for by going to traffic school.:)

Whether it's a big deal or not (it may for some departments and not for others), it is very important that you are honest in your application. In my opinion, you do not have to volunteer information if it is outside of the parameters of what is being requested. I don't mean deception by omission, what I mean is if they asked you, "Have you used any illegal drugs within the last two years?" and you last used an illegal drug 5 years ago, you can honestly answer, "No." I personally would not elaborate. If they wanted additional info, they would ask you more of an open ended question, as opposed to a specific one. After all, these are cops questioning you, not an HR department at Wal-Mart.

Hope this is helpful.

protein and creatine are not going to hurt you they are legal. Nearly every weightlifter you ask will say they take protein.

Thanks GoldBadge. Well, the question does not mention "illegal drugs" as that is asked right at the top of the list. It is at the bottom where it asks for "illegal use of prescription drugs". I don't consider my use to be illegal but I am confused anyway. Also, I have already provided that information on prescription drugs to one department, so I am sure both agencies will check with each other.

This is very confusing. I was honest with this information and am wondering whether I am now going to get screwed. I hope not. The BI told me it is no big deal, that they look for drug usage but I don't know what to make of his statement.

I wouldn't worry about it - especially if he told you it was no big deal.

I think at some point of their lives, many people (myself included) took a drug prescribed for someone else, not for abuse (i.e., to get a buzz), but for an ailment. Is it technically wrong? Yes. But I myself have taken a couple of my wife's Ambien to help me sleep. That in itself will not ever cause me to lose any sleep. :)

Is it technically wrong? Yes.

Does "technically wrong" amount to "illegal use?" Also, would it be a good idea to call him and correct the time period of use, or should I just let it go?

Thanks for your response. That definitely brought down my anxiety level.

"Illegal use" sounds harsh for a situation like that, but the answer is yes. Prescribed medication is only to be used by whom it was prescribed for. That being said, I really think most departments really are looking for people that used mom's Vicodin or Percoset for "recreational" use.

My opinion is, yes to both questions.
