I was curious as to what guns are on the approved list for on-duty guns and off duty guns.
Thanks.

I'm (hopefully) about to go into the academy, and this might sound like a dumb question. Are we allowed to practice with these guns (at the range of course) before we decide to use one of them for ourselves.

No. You get an opportunity to handle each duty gun for aminute at the academy. Then you have to decide which one you want.
If your a male and have a decent grip get the glock. If not get the S&W but dont get the Sig ( terrible DAO pull )

So they do not allow the DAK trigger then?

yea the glock is pretty reliable and easy to use.. i personal think the S&W is a good classic gun... is it the .40 S&W and glock? or is it the 9mm? where in NY are you guys from

I was thinking the same thing. DAK is just starting to catch on with LE agencies though, so maybe it's still too new for NYPD. I would definitely take a Sig P226 DAK over the others. Too bad.

DAK triggers are excellent triggers. I hate traditional DAO triggers.

No all duty guns are Double Action Only except the Glock (safe action )
The DAK has been tested and is continuing testing in a different weight of pull.
All NYPD guns are 9mm DAO
Except for the revolvers which are .38spl. DAO

remember the glock 19 is a compact, so if you have big hands, it might not be the best fit for you. My hands are huge, so the curved back smith or the sig were my best option.

What gun is really the best one to use? people keep saying that the Sig rust and the Glock jams alot. that can be trouble out there in the streets.
So my question is, even if you clean them will that still happen?
Just would be nice to know for the future.

Cant say much about the Sig becasue I dont own one. As far as glock goes I have three of them. My glock 23 Ive had for a few years now and put Thousands of rounds through it, the other two a G26 and a G36 ive put a few hundred through each. I have NEVER had any kind of jam on any one of them. Im not saying they don't because im sure they do, but this is all based on my experience with them that Ive never had a problem.
ok thank you because I like the feel of the glock. I'm going to go with that one then.

Just get the one you feel most comfortable with...don't listen to people...everyone gives their two cents in and you don't pick what you want..any gun will jam, provided you don't maintain it..I carry the S&W on duty and the Glock 26 as my off-duty gun..never jammed since I've had them..simple maintaining of them (wiping it when it rains/snows outside, wiping out the dust gathering) will keep you on an even keel.

the best way to choose is actually by feeling the gun and shooting it if you can, juts because someone loves the glock doesn't mean that it might be the best for your hands, me personally I like the Sig p226 it's very reliable, I love its looks and so on, I don't like the Glock because I find it way toooo light for me, and I don't like how when you fire a round the shell sometimes comes back at you and hits you in the face I've seen many glocks do that, and I don't like the way it feels while I'm holding it, The S&W has a reputation of being one of those guns that gets better with time just like wine, the more you rounds you put through it the better it gets, Like I said everyone has their own opinions, you will find people that hate the Sig p226 and like the glock, you will find people that hate the glock and like the Sig P226, you will find people that hate both the Glock19 and the Sig P226 and Love the S&W.
As for the Sig P226 rusting, My uncle has had one since 1998 and it still shoots like it was brand new and looks brand new, every gun will rust if you don't do the appropriate maintenance on them.

Thank you both. I'm going to have to feel them both out then.
Can I sell it back or get a diff Gun if I don't like the one I pick from the start? This is the last question i'm going to ask about this ok Thank you alot.

The Kahr K9 is a good gun..but the NYPD screwed with the trigger so much, its a paperweight now!! I'm not a full-sized Glock fan, but the Glock 26 is cool..easy to conceal, holds a lot of ammo and is fairly accurate..

Each gun has it own problem, you will find people that will tell you that the glock sucks, you will find people that will tell you that the S&W sucks and you will find people that will tell you that the Sig Sucks. I chose the Sig p226 for on duty and Glock 26 off duty.
The best advise I can give you is pick the gun that you feel the most comfortable with. I've seen all three guns jam on the firing line.

Most jams are either from a limp wrist or bad ammo, not the gun. Also, I think the .38 has not been authorized for off-duty in quite a while, can anyone confirm?

honestly i do not know why you have a choice of guns? It should be standard among all patrolman. What if your in a gun battle and you happen to run out of bullets? You can't get one from yuor partners if he has a different handgun.....Yes they all use 9mm but there magazines are not compatible. Am i correct? If they are then forget tihs post? Which i'm sure they are not

Norwich has a long and distinguished history of placing tank officers into The US Army. NO Abrams tank has ever been knocked out of action by another enemy tank. I have never heard of an Abrams using up it's ammo load, either in projectiles or .50cal !
The point is that if you run out of your carrying ammo load don't you think you may have been shooting a little ineffective ? We don't fire warning shots, we shoot at center mass, which means you have to see what you are shooting at before firing.

I have a little over 3,000 rounds through my Glock 23 and not a single failure to feed or failure to fire. As long as you don't limp wrist it, you shouldn't have any problems.

jams are usually due to poor maintenance. I am a sig guy for the most part but one thing that's pretty convenient about the glock is they both have the same mags. That can be very helpful if you have the g19 and are carrying the 26 as a back up.

wild card, you can carry your service pistol off duty whenever you want. the off duty gun is just smaller and easier to conceal. i personally plan on carrying my g19 as my off duty since it's small enough. its about the same size as the sig off duty... and i dont want to get involved but the glock is the best out of all!

Yes, you are right my friend..Norwich has many great tank officer..Captain Burt would agree with your statement :) If you went through the NYPD Firearms & Tactics school..you would understand why I say that. When I left to come to Miami PD, I had to get completely re-trained on marksmanship! NYPD has the best cops in the world (in my opinion), but cops in FL can shoot their tails off...
