Hiring Policies for NY

I'm an Officer in NC and may wish to move back home to NY (upstate).

Question: Does NY hire anyone over 40 with LEO experience? I had heard (of course through the grapevine) if you are over 35 you don't get hired. Any truth to this.

Would love to be back but alas age does come with me if I do and I don't want to give up LE

See if you can do a lateral transfer (not sure you can do that from outta state).

NYS is pretty set on their age limit, unless you have prior military. Connecticut has no age limit though, if you're looking to at least move into the Tri State Area There's also no age limit for Corrections.

Taz I'm in the process of lateraling to upstate NY, and some dept's do accept out-of-state laterals. You just need to get with certain dept's and talk to them about it. All you then need to do is take whatever classes NYS thinks you need to take to get certified.

It is a very frustrating, exhausting, and painful process though, let me warn you. Because NYS is so old-fashioned with their civil service laws and residency laws...it's pretty ridiculous actually, when you compare it to most other states. But it is do-able.

How many hours do new recruits have to do befor their "graduation" and does NY offer night classes for those who work?

No it wouldn't be night classes, it would be during the regular academy hours, daytime, weekdays. And how many hours depends on however many they decide you need. Generally it's just the classes on NY penal code and vehicle code.
