Responded to an assault call two nights ago, get a description of the actors vehicle. My Sgt. comes upon the vehicle and makes a stop, I am 10 seconds behind him. Sarge is contacting the driver so I move up to passenger side of vehicle. It's 0230 and raining. Flash my light in the car and check hands...they are empty and in sight...scan the interior of the car and see what I recognize as a S&W auto pistol stuck between driver seat and console. As I am drawing my weapon I say "GUN!" Sarge draws too and orders knucklehead out of vehicle.3rd officer arrives and makes driver one with the pavement. This all happened very fast. Turns out to be a very real looking CO2 type pellet pistol that this fool had. As the adrenaline is coursing through my veins I ask none too politely why he has it and if he knew what would have happened had his hand come close to it. Our subject is amused by the situation and thought it was "cool" that he had two Glocks pointed at him and that he was dragged from the vehicle. He has no idea how serious that situation was. Ended up going for warrants and DWLS...is a suspect in a sexual assault also. Real nice guy in addition to being a complete idiot. End of story. Question...anyone else encountered these type of non gun situations? I believe he carried it to "impress" or intimidate others. I made it clear that it was a good way to get killed.

Several years ago, my partner and I had conducted a traffic stop on a Nissan that had six people inside (it should have had only 5).
While my partner was writing a ticket (unseatbelted passenger), I was talking to one of the passengers. Out of the corner of my eye I could see a couple of 14 y/o kids walking towards us. I then noticed one of them holding what appeared to be a older-style S&W auto on his hand.
I pushed the passenger out of the way and drew down on the the kids. They both had that "deer in the headlights" look on their faces as the idiot with the gun dropped it. It was only when it hit the ground and made a distinctive "plastic" sound that I knew the gun wasn't real. It was a realistic-looking toy replica.
Further inspection of the gun showed it to be VERY realistic looking, even close up; again, until it hit the pavement, I wouldn't have thought of it as being fake.
The reason the kids decided to bring their "gun" to my traffic stop is because they thought it would be cool

A Green Bay officer just shot and killed a guy a few weeks ago. The guy had pulled out a pellet gun. Looked exactly like a stainless Beretta.

I had one that was carrying the pellet gun copy of the Colt Python.......but even more tacky was the fact that the barrel was broken off so it only looked real when it was shoved in his belt. The only thing worse than getting shot over a toy gun is getting shot over half a toy gun
You want to see a VERY realistic looking paint gun? Take a look at this:http://www.gunfx.com/pages/training.html
These M-16 copies are actually airguns that shoot paint rounds. They are VERY realistic, even when you're holding them. The disassmbly is a "break open", just like the real thing.

You should see the guns we play Airsoft with, they look and feel very much like the weapons we carry. They shoot a 6mm hard plastic ball at a rate of 400+fps.
It makes for some very real training situtions, plus it doesn't hurt as much as paintball does :D :D

Your post reminds of something I saw a while back, I believe on the Calibre Press website.
It showed a picture of a guy who had the image of a gun tattooed onto his stomach and groin area. It was designed so that if the person didn't have a shirt on, or somehow had his waistband area exposed, it would appear that he had a gun tucked into his waistband.
What a moron!

Those are great little guns, I paid $17 from Tapco for mine. It fits in my duty (and off-duty) holsters, and won't raise a welt if fired at more than arms' length.
Of course, the little mini-machine guns are just pure fun. :D

Our ex-chief shot and killed a EDP with one of the 1911 copies made by Daisy.
Even the intel given to dispatch by caller (his wife or girlfriend) was that he had a "nine millimeter."
Cleared by DA, and in his own conscious.

Greetings Mack, down here we get the occasional idiots that drive around and think its cool to point "slug" guns at people. Very realistic Glocks, Sigs, can be bought w/out a licence if over 18 or 16 with a licence.
We always take it seriously and charge them for presenting a firearm......because as everycop knows...you just never know
Cheers :)

I came so close to doing this one time that I still have nightmares over it.
I was working as a reserve city officer at the time. Cruised thorough the Safeway parking lot just as this guy walked into the store holding the gun. I called it in as a 211 (armed robbery) going down, then went in after him. (Bad tactics, but that is for another post.)
I challenged him, with my gun drawn, and he turned toward me! I then saw who it was (happened to live in my neighborhood and I knew was EDP.)
He will never know how close he came to dying that afternoon. He was "just taking it in to show it to my friend."

The new Walther pellet guns look identical to the PPK. I saw one in the gun shop and, if it wasn't for the lettering on the box and the price, would have thought it was real. I could easily see capping someone who points that thing at me.

airsoft guns have long since eclipsed the 17 dollar spring powered monster from Tapco. There are some very realistic 'training' aids that are full size, full weight, and full auto.

I know more than a few departments that are using them for training.

A few months back, a Des Moines police officer almost shot a stupid kid, who had a pellet gun which resembled a stainless S & W auto. And then some bank robbers in a suburb of Des Moines led police on a chase, and when forced to stop, they pointed what appeared to be Glock pistols at the officers. Two were shot dead, and the other two were wounded. Idiots must have had a death wish  .
When I was working private security, doing patrols of 7 conveinence stores, I raised the devil about them selling these toy guns, which resembled a snub nosed revolver. These guns had a red plastic plug in the end of the barrel, but with little or no effort, that plug could be removed, and it looked like a real gun.
We approached a car which had two suspicious acting individuals in it one night; we both saw this gun on the floorboard at the same time, and ordered the occupants to grab the windshield! It was one of those toys, and they said they bought it in that store. I confiscated that gun.
Next night on patrol, I had that gun in my pocket. Each time I stopped at a store, I'd talk to the clerk on duty, and then without warning, I'd point that gun at the clerk. All but one just about crapped in their pants. The one oddball was a gun enthusiast, who made it for a toy right off, and he just laughed. After my writing of a detailed report, which went to their district office, those guns were pulled from the stores!

When teaching CCW classes I often use a plastic government model .45 just for demonstration purposes. I didnt realize till a few classes ago that most people thought that it was a real .45.
We keep it in a box with all of our other training aids and I usually lay it on the podium I'm teaching from.
As a result, we include about a 5 minute section on "realistic" guns. In just about every class there is always some "expert" that says that he would never mistake a real gun for a plastic gun. I let him make his statement and then I hand him the plastic .45. You should see the looks on their faces and the statements they make when they realize its fake. So far its been a great training aid.
Fact of the matter is people do try to pass them of for real guns. Just a few months ago a PDQ was held up with one. It was beleived to be real until the guy was caught with the plastic gun tucked in his briches. He was under the mistaken assumption that since the gun wasnt "real" that he wouldnt be charged with armed robbery. He has lots and lots of time to think about his decision now.
