A first-year Mohave County Deputy Sheriff has been killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 west of Kingman.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety identifies the deputy as 21-year-old Philip A. Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was operating his patrol car late Saturday night when it left the roadway.

D-P-S investigators say Rodriguez was ejected from his marked patrol car.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office says Rodriguez had been a deputy sheriff for less than a year. Before that, Rodriguez worked as a detention officer.

Funeral services for Deputy Rodriguez are pending.

Wow, 21 is way too young to die. Very sad.

Not to take away from the tragedy, but if he was ejected from his vehicle.... would he still be alive if he was wearing a seatbelt?

Yes.
In one year, the Blythe CHP Office investigated 27 fatalities.
It was found that 25 of those people would have been alive if they had been using a seat belt.
