View Full Version : Motor Officer question
Hey all. I am a cop with a small federal department. I am starting research on whats involved with starting and maintaining a Motorcycle unit. Anyone have any experience in this area? I need to compile enough data to convince certain individuals that this is a good idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
If you just need data on costs and maintenance, any of the big 3(Kawasaki, Harley, BMW) have all the info you'll need. Just see your local dealer or regional sales rep. BMW info is also available online at www.bmwmc.net (http://www.bmwmc.net) You'll have to get the password/username from BMW. They usually mail it out with their brochures to LE agencies.

I went through the same process about 2 years ago, except I was trying to expand our already existing unit to the west coast. Basically, you want to make it as cost-effective as you can on paper. I think I still have a copy of my proposal if you want to see how I did mine. Being Federal, we had to send out specs to get bids from at least 3 different dealerships. Because we have a very specific spec. sheet, only Harley Davidson currently meets our departments requirements. That made it easier for me, and, I knew that I didn't have to worry about Kawasaki or Honda or BMW low-bidding to get the contract.

i just went through this process. i submitted for motorcycles, but my chief doesn't like them so we're going with a camaro instead. she likes the versatility of a car and doesn't want the liability of a bike. i did talk to several agencies that use bikes when i got all my info and one officer sent me his entire proposal and bid sheet requirements. you can email me if you need info.
