Not black, you'll look like a mortician. Go as formal as you can otherwise. Navy Suit, white shirt, matching tie. Personally, I like the red power tie from the Reagan '80s, others will think that is too much and will recommend a more subdued hue.

PS- Don't forget the belt, navy socks, and polished conservative shoes (I like wing tips and floresheims but that's my age. I think those trendy square-toe shoes look like crap).

PPS- Two or three button single breasted suit. No pimped out 4 or 5 or 6 button double breasted on-the-fly trendy-suits.

YMMV.

go in a nice pair of beat up Abercrombie pants and Abercrombie t-shirt, nice Diesel shoes. Dont forget to spike the front of your hair up too. :D

Nothing wrong w/ black in my opinion. I wore a tan one to my recent interview and I was the only one not wearing black/gray/navy and I felt that I stood out (in a good way) because of it. I think it was easier for them to remember me.

After I typed all this, I saw ElDiabloJoe's post and he's right on the money.

I've been an agent for a long time and sat on a few boards. You can't go wrong with a true navy, 2 or 3 button suit, a starched white or light blue shirt, a conservative tie, black dress belt, solid dark socks, and shined black shoes.

If you want to be a federal agent, you should try to look like the prototypical federal agent.

To follow up, I have my polygraph Friday and am wearing black suit, white shirt and maroon tie (no design).

A dark color conservative cut (2 or 3 button single breasted), and a nice silk tie in a tight full windsor not. Well polished shoes. Make sure it fits properly. Improper fit of the suit coat, pants, and or shirt will make you look very sloppy. So don't borrow someone else's suit, get your own and get it properly tailored.

The color itself isn't all that important as long as the overall look is relatively conservative. I've worn navy, dark olive, dark brown, charcoal grey, etc, and been successful in the interviews. I'd avoid black as it's hard not to look like a funeral director or a throw back the 50s era Hoover boys.

Belt and shoes should match, meaning black or cordovan leather. Again, highly polished. Your socks should be the same color as your suit. Trust me on this you do NOT match your socks to your shoe, you match them to the pants. Dark brown suit equals dark brown socks even if you decide to wear black shoes. Navy blue suit, equals navy blue socks. Etc, Etc.
