View Full Version : Scenario Question
Hi everyone -
I had an interview awhile back with a Sheriff's Office and they asked some scenario questions. Now I know that most of them are common sense for the most part, but I do have one question about something they asked me. And boy do I hope it makes sense when I type it out.
The scenario was if I had a person in custody en route to the jail and another call came over the radio of a bar fight and there was only one deputy responding and I was the closest backup, what would I do?
My response was to drive by the scene first before continuing on to the jail with the person I've got. My rationale behind this was officer safety. Is this something that I'd be allowed to do? Or is it if I have someone in custody that I must continue on and bring them to the jail before I go out to offer assistance to anyone?
Thanks for your time and I hope I made sense.

our policy is you stop for nothing. if there is already a call for backup backup will get there. its a risk during a transport, not to mention whats to say it isn't a setup?
Well that makes perfect sense. Silly me for not realizing that. Don't I feel a bit dumb now. Thanks for the response, it's greatly appreciated.

I see policy as a giude line not as the only way to do things. The policy may say to "Stop for nothing", but my common sense says go a head a slide by and make sure everything is OK. Take the long way to the SD. If there are only two cops on in the county, then there are pobably not many more as far as troopers or city guys floating around. cant hurt to make sure your buddy isnt getting killed.
The problem! If something happens ie wreck the squad, or something else, your going to get your featheres ruffled a bit by the admin. I kinda like an extra day off now and then not connected to my days off. I have a special bank account thaat has $500 buck in it. when i get suspended i take the 500 or what I need out and pay the bills. gradually, between then and my next suspension I build the account back up to 500. that way i never miss bills and the days off with no pay dont sting quite so bad. :D
FYI I have only used it 3 times. Not bad all things considered.

Department policy is going to dictate what actually would happen here. If it were me, unless an officer is calling for help, I'm going to the jail to drop off my prisoner. It's the dispatchers job to get responding officers backup units.
Let them beat the **** out of each other so when you get there, they're already tired. ;)

Personally, I usually stop a short distance away from the bar and blare the siren for a few minutes (especially if I'm waiting for back-up). That way, anybody still left fighting at the bar is serious enough about it to warrant my attention. On the greater scheme of things, a bar fight is just not that big of a deal. It is certainly the kind of scenario that a solo officer could (and probably should) stand by for a back squad to arrive anyways. No sense in getting yourself hurt over some drunken idiots who couldn't play nice.

:D:D:D Our division had a CS (you can guess what it stood for) fund of $500 as well. It was kinda like a contest - you get suspended, if the division (10 guys) voted it was CS, you goit the money! :D:D:D

Your .sig indicates you are not a police officer. This is the "Ask A Cop" thread, right? Just checking.
