I am toying with the idea of moving to Florida. I am looking to be a road deputy in a medium sized county. What are the opportunities of being on the Motor Squad? What are some good, squared away agencies? I was looking at Citrus and Manitee Counties. What is the overtime like generally? I'm looking for a minumum salary of 35k. Any help would be great guys, thanks!

I seriously considered moving to southeast florida right after i got out of college. I filled out a few apps for departments down there but could never make the jump. My personal favorites after doing a bit of research ended up being near some of the beaches, ie. broward, palm beach, boca raton, boyton beach in those areas. Cost of living is ok and pay is pretty decent too. Major plus....no snow! What area are you considering? I'd say google each department and dont be afraid to give a call to several departments down there.

Well after doing some research over the past few days, I like Citrus and Manatee Counties the best. Im looking for somewhere a little bit smaller to medium size (150-250,000 people). It would be a perk if it was on the coast but not a requirement. I'd like it with a lower crime rate so I can start a family there and feel safe living there. Although that does make it less fun on the road...

Why not look into Central Florida. Two very good Sheriff's Departments come to mind. Orange County Sheriff's Dept,(Orlando) and the Seminole County Sheriff's Dept (Sanford). Seminole County is immediately north of Orange County, and like Orange County, has experienced phenominal growth. Both agencies are well respected, and offer pretty good pay and benefits. Orange County has a traffic unit that includes motors. Seminole did at one time, but I don't know if they still have such a unit.

Ehhhhh, Orange County does not pay well and your call-log is usually always packed the whole shift. All the work is not worth the pay. Orange County is loosing deputies, its getting to the point most cannot even afford the rent there much less a house of their own. I almost went to OCSO. I also almost joined an small agency east of Orlando which paid several thousand more than OCSO, pretty pathetic if you ask me. My partner and I recently moved back here to PA, we just werent happy down there anyways and I chose my professional law enforcement career would be better up here and I would be rewarded with what Police deserve as far as pay and such. Plus, to be honest, Florida lost its luster real quick, we spent 4 years in central florida. All I got out of Florida was some great law enforcement experience, but thats all. Problem is, frankly, Florida is way too transient, we were unable to meet good decent clean friends, nearly everyone we tried to meet had some kinda shady past and got into trouble. Lot of rude people, it was too expensive to live there and no pay to make up for it. Florida has great officers, but, i dont know, the state really turned me off, it lost its luster. Hell I had 77 sex offenders within 1 mile of my apartment and 5 were labelled as predators. State has some issues, and last I read not too long ago there was a mass exodus out of Florida, mostly born and bred Floridians getting outta dodge cause of the exploding population, mostly dirtbags from other states flocking to FL, and the cost of living and over commericalization of the areas.. not what we expected.

I agree with most of what you said. I was born and raised in South Florida and frankly I LOVE FLORIDA!!! you might say I'm a proud FLORIDA CRACKER!! LMAO!!!. Humor aside here Florida is a great state. South Florida and Central Florida have issues but northern Florida is still ripe for the living. I love Northern Florida. As for the thread starter if you are looking for a nice place to raise your family I suggest looking towards Jacksonville and that part of Florida. They are real beautiful homes and communities with low crime rates and the pay is pretty decent along with living cost up there. Florida is experiencing a boom and other people are flocking over here which frankly has me ****ed off big time because Florida doesnt need anyone else were already over populated as it is.

As for people doing an exodus out of Florida the exodus is taking place not outside of Florida but to Northern Florida. Most people down here are trying to get away from the city and heading up there which ironically they are probably going to turn that beautiful country side part of Florida like another Miami-Dade or Broward county which is another thing that has me mad about the overpopulation of Florida. Other than the issues that were talked about I think Florida is a great state and to get a LEO job its much easier than anywhere else if you ask me.

PS: Alot of people down in Central and South Florida do have shady pasts its really rare to find anyone who has a normal past in South or Central Florida.

Thanks for some insight on the situation down there. Ive never really been interested in South Florida but I didn't know central FL was just as bad. Maybe I'll look a little bit further up north in the state as suggested :D

[yes most of florida is this bad, I went to seminole county for a while and visited some parts of S.FLA its a jungle outside the ocean area. I would not raise a family there, but if you are just looking for a head start in police work, it gets no better you will see it ALL.\

Good Luck.

stop it you guys. Florida is the place to be if you want a career in law enforcement. Why do you think all of these people are flocking down there. There are a lot of opportunities in florida. You just have to go down there and see for youself. Me personally I'm planning on moving back to florida, after a long 4 years in freaking wisconsin. I'm sick and tired of winter. Good luck to you guys.
