View Full Version : New York City vs Baltimore City VS Los Angeles
I know NYC starts pretty low at around 30k and tops out at like 60k for patrolman. I believe that Baltimore starts at 40k and tops out at also 60-65k. LAPD starts at 50,000+ but isnt the cost of living really high? I know all 3 are really recruiting hard and some don't require more than 60 credits.
Crime wise, whose the worse and the safest? Which city is more dangerous for a policeman? Any information on these departments compared to eachother would be great, thanks.

DEPO,
Do a search of Baltimore Police Department. I have posted a few times on the site in regards to the department. As for the danger, Baltimore ranks in the top 5 each year. Have a few friends on the department, and I was hired twice, but turned it down because of the departments issues. Many Issues!!! A buddy was telling me that a guy in his academy class was kicked out towards the end because he was smoking dope. Now not only was he smoking dope, but he would do it on lunch breaks. If anything that should say alot about the people they hire. Can't say much about the others. Have talked to a ew on NYPD that have enjoyed the job, but hated it just as much. LAPD......well they're LAPD. I'm sure you've seen a story or 2 involving them. But I don't know, nor have I spoken to anyone from there.

DEPO, you will find Baltimore cops transferring to NYPD, and NYPD cops transferring to LAPD. I doubt you'll find LAPD cops transferring to Baltimore or NYPD, unless that is where their family is from, or some other extenuating non work related circumstance. LAPD's Chief Bratton was the best Police Commissioner NYPD has had in 20 plus years. I've never heard any NYPD cops that transferred to LAPD that regretted the move. Statistically speaking, Baltimore has the highest violent crime rate of the three locations. NYPD's starting salary will probably go up considerably after the PERB arbitration is finalized, if starting salary and proximity to NJ are primary deciding factors. As a retired NYPD officer, I would pick LAPD first, if starting my career today. The NYPD has stonewalled NYC cops trying to have their service records released to Port Authority PD, in an attempt to retain trained officers. In a strange irony, a potential NYPD hiree went on an NYPD chat board for advice, guidance in joining the NYPD. He was convinced to join LAPD, after overwhelming opinion of NY's Finest, with the assistance of one former NYPD officer now employed by the LAPD. The NYC cops are throwing the fellow a going away party, as he embarks on a career in LAPD. That should be all the explanation necessary. The political climate in NYC is not good, and the current Police Commissioner, Ray Kelly, is more concerned with being the next Neville Chamberlain, aspiring to be Mayor at the expense of officers faced with using DPF on duty. In the end, do what is best for you, stay safe, and good luck wherever you go.
