Hello, I was wondering what people could tell me about the NOPD, I'm thinking of applying and would like some background on what the department is like. I tried the LA section but haven't heard anything yet. Any info would be greatly appreciated, the more the better. I already know there are better paying depts, but I really want NO.
Thanks

I'd start by reading up on some articles in newspapers. There are many problems with the department. I can't say from experience, but I have read many articles of horror. Try a search on Yahoo and Google. Try their website also. I'm sure they're still hiring.

some say that NOPD is one of, if not, the most corrupt department in the US, definitely do your research before applying, they have A LOT of problems down there from before Katrina, and of course afterwards...
***no offense to those serving down there, however you probably understand what i mean

I work for BRPD...(Baton Rouge) I'm not going to sit and rag on NOPD but since the hurricane they have there problems. The city has very little money and very high crime. Murders after murders. There are alot better agencys in Louisiana to work for.

I've googled just about everything, I can find, I called up my old CJ professor who was from the Baton Rouge area, but no one can give me a current status of life in the department. I've found plenty of info sayng the city is in chaos with the murders and such, but what can I say I like taking on borderline hopeless causes(Iraq veteran). As far as the corruption I heard about that when I was a CJ major in the late 90's. but is that still a big deal? I still haven't found what officers from within the dept think of it, like if they think it's broken, no equipment, bad training/management, poor officers/great officers, ect..
And for everyone who has responded, a big thank you, somedays it's tough to get anyone to respond.

Tac,
Don't waste your time. The only people staying there are those that have no other option. Low pay, lower morale, and extreme cost of living will make it a waste of time for you. Not to mention the overt racism present on the force.

Thanks FMR, it's always nice to get some info from someone who has been there. It's a little depressing though since I have family there and I love the city, plus I guess there isn't much competition for jobs if it's really that bad. On the upside that means they probably could use some good officers to try to help turn things around, ya I'm an optomist most of the time. How far spreading is the racisim in the dept, I've heard the rumors of corruption, but the racisim thing is new to me?

Oh, that's great; I love departments that have people jumping ship on them. Did they say why exactly they left i.e.. better pay, housing, incompetent leadership?

You should look into the Kenner Police Department. It's right outside New Orleans and the city doesn't have the problems that New Orleans does. It's a smaller department, higher pay and morale seems to be pretty good. Their website is www.kennerpd.com.

I concur. Kenner PD is a good department.
Problems with New Orleans - you name it.
Poor pay, Corruption, Racism in the ranks, Overt racism in promotions (an example, when they promote from the sgt's test, they arrange by highest scores to lowest. If the highest score is a white person, then they promote them and go to the next highest score of a black person. That may be 25 slots down, so those other 24 people get skipped for promotion to make it "fair" for the black person. I believe it ought to be off or scores directly with no consideration given to race, sex, creed, national orgin etc, but I guess that makes me "racist" ...)
No take home cars, no backing by the city, there are officers who were not paid for all the overtime they worked in katrina, and will never see that money, unlawful terminations, you have to buy most everything, they only give a gun, badge, vest (maybe not now), radio and PR24, everything else you had to buy with that pathetic salary..... etc.
When I was with them I had two city checks bounce, and that was 5 years before katrina.

Well thanks for the heads up guys I appreciate it. It sounds like a sad situation for the officers down there for the officers to be in. If you have to put up with all that stuff , I'm guessing it would be hard to enjoy your job. I guess I was just thinking, but do they have a union there, and if they do it sounds like they need to pull some weight. Anyway, thanks for the lead on Kenner PD :) , from what I've found it sounds like a lot less hassels.

Patrolmen don't get take home cars. Rank and specialised units did, well some did. Prior to katrina, those that were driving their units outside of the city had to be grandfathered in on the residency law, and were in violation of department policy by taking a city vehicle outside of orleans parish. I don't have it wrong, that was the policy up until 2005, but it could have changed since then. When I was in the task force and DIU I did not have a take home, they did not have enough. Had I stayed, I would have eventually shared an unmarked chevrolet cavalier with one of the other detectives. That of course was pre-katrina before everything was destroyed.

Well 2 house sdown from me when i lived in Gramercy , LA since 2000 i had a NOPD guy living there with his unit. and today he still has his unit there. and the few times i spoke with his he stated he was a patrol officer.
In baton rouge i see several crime scene SUVs and units parked at peoples houses.
I guess after katriana it changed

I did'nt say he's a liar. I said patrolmen did'nt get take home units when I was there. Ask him if he's on task force. Task force is not a regular patrol unit. Either way, if that's happening, it's an exception, not the routine. MOF - get the unit # off it and PM it to me and I'll tell you who he is and what unit he works, what do you say?
