I am a licesned, full-time Police Officer in MN and I am attempting to research statistics on a speed awareness campain.

In a City near my jurisdiction, signs were placed under the speed limits signs stating the following "Strictly Enforced by Laser", "Radar Patrolled" and/or "Laser Patrolled". This signs are randomally placed around high speed area in the City. The signs are brightly colored (red, orange).

I spoke with the Chief of Police in the City and stated citations have deceased, as well as, crashes. However, he did not have any other stats on the effectiveness of the signs. He stated one of the officers went to a conference in Seattle (National Traffic Seattle Counsil and MADD) and found out about these signs.

I am considering proposing to my Chief to get these same signs. Anyone out there ever heard of the signs and have any advices or stats on their effectiveness? I tried scanning the Internet but found nothing.

Try contacting the PA State Police or the PA Dept of Transportation.

I know they use the signs in Central PA.

I am aware of a certain stretch of road that has several individual signs that read, all together, as one sentence. This is from my fuzzy memory but I believe it is accurate. "Don't get risky -- the speed is -- 60 MPH" These signs are decent sized and green. I think if they were orange or another bright color they might have even more of an impact but I can't vouch for that.

All I know is that every time I drive past I notice them because of the fact they aren't just one specified MPH sign. They are different and that attracts my attention.

There was a study done by NHTSA a few years back which showed signs are only effective for a given period of time. I forget now the number of weeks. After that the people get use to seeing them and no longer pay them much attention. Might check with NHTSA to see if they still have the study someplace.

Here is a discussion of similar signing in CA. It may be of use.
