Lately I have had generalized lateral (outside) knee pain after I run while training for the agency I have applied for. I have read online it may be the IT band. Anyone ever suffer from the same issue? If so, what have you done to relieve the pain. Thanks.

This is worth a try but maybe you should look at your style when you run. If you are lifting your legs up high off of the ground, the jarring might be causing you discomfort in your knees.

I am a big guy, 6'2" 225 lbs and I found out while in the Marine Corps that my weight was causing my knees to hurt so, I changed my style of running by lengthening my stride and trying my best not to lift my legs too high off of the ground.

With a little practice, it might take the pain away from your knees but if it doesn't then I would consult an exercise professional.

Hey springer,

I think mbmx makes a good suggestion about looking into your stride, and I also suggest making sure you're wearing the right type of shoes, if only to eliminate these as possible causes of your knee pain. You can probably find more information about this online, the Runner's World website and forums, or offline with RW magazine or maybe books from the local library.

Here's a list with a bunch of injury-related sites:

Also I don't know about your area, but here in the DC region there are running clubs who do track runs with coaches who will evaluate your technique. And there's always the professional coach option as mbmx suggests.

Regarding shoes, we also have good local running stores here that will fit you with shoes, watch you run with them outside to evaluate your stride, and even return them if they're not working out. The shoes cost a bit more but the service is well worth it.

Thnaks for the suggestions. I bought my shoes at a store that specializes in running but you never know.

Try to put health-related questions in the Health and Fitness section.

To address your original concern, look online or in sports stores for some kind of knee strap device. It is a padded strap that wraps around the knee below the knee cap.
