Just wondering if most on here work in the state prison or jail system? If you have worked both, which do you prefer?

The reason I ask is I work for the state and I am thinking of working for the jail so I can eventually advance into different branches of LE.

County jail. No desire to go to work with all of the welfare moms at TDCJ.
Use to work in a state prison. Now I work in a federal jail. I'll take state prison over fed jail anytime. But we have a lot of state prison convicts where I work on fed writs so I do get to deal with some professional convicts, which I prefer honestly. A old state penn run "old school" is the best place to be a C/O by far.

It's sad to see what TDCJ is becoming after knowing what it once was.
I've worked in three prisons; one state and two federal and I think a jail may be something I would try when I retire in a few years. I've never personally known anyone who went from a jail to a prison who didn't stay in the prison strictly for the money. Not surprising when you consider that jails tend to be ran by law enforcement officers while prisons tend to be "managed" by social workers and New Left hippies who were bright enough not to get a felony record in the '60s & '70s.

Jail. Took the job to jump to a local PD, but I like it so much I am going to stay. No interest in state job (we make more anyways).

Sheriff's department. Working in my county jail we have the benefit of be assigned to the court house, transports, jail or for a few of us the road. I like that because it breaks up the ruts you get in some times.

According to his profile he's in Orange County, which is about as close to Louisiana as you can be without being in it, and about as close to the Gulf of Mexico as you want to be during storm season.

I work for the County jail and the Sheriff's office. Sheriff's Office here is different from most in that we do not patrol at all (Metropolitan Government; 1 Metro Police Department covers pretty much whole county). We work only in the jails, the transportation between them, and serving papers.

Aahh yes, the profile, didn't even think to look there..was thinking of the art of conversation and yep, I know where Orange County is since I'm just as close to the coast in Galveston County. Thanks

I worked state max, and now work federal High Medium. When I first started in state max it was fun, alot of physical activity, but that gets old after awhile "Paperwork, bumps...bruises" I love the Federal Side, pays alot better, retirements better, less work, less bull**** when it comes to extracting inmates and what not, not that it doesn't still happen, it does....just not as frequent. Dude, screw the state joints and the jails, apply federal, do yourself a favor for once.

State Prison, and yes TDCJ has gone downhill, I am shocked at the way it changed since I worked for the state the first time.

I've considered it. Right now I'm thinking of making the move to county from state. Thanks for the advice.

Started in a county JAIL, but now work for the State. Except the powers that be call my facility a Youth Correctional Facility. I call it kiddie camp. It's a day camp with a fence around it. No towers, no walls. Just chain link fencing.

Large county jail, the pay is about as good as anywhere else in the state so I'm happy with my choice.
Sate prison. Wouldn't want it any other way unless the pay is better. And that isn't going to happen around here.

I work in our State Max Institution. Most of the people that leave and go to the jails are mostly using the work done at the prison as a stepping stone to get on with local Sheriff's or city PD.

Pre-trial County Jail. We do not house anyone that has been sentenced. We have the CO Workhouse for that! :)
