So I dont know really where to post this, but I have been on a High since about noon today. Got a call from the chief and asked me to come in and have a talk. The talk ended up being me signing my contract and starting all the paperwork. Looks like I have either the May, but more then likely June PTI class written all over me. They had me turn in my two weeks notice to my current job, and I will be out of there in a little over a week. They would have issued me a badge today but there was some descrepency with the one gent that was ahead of me on the list. They started measuring me for my Kev. vest, as well as uniform sizes which was awesome/thrilling.
The best way to put the day in summery is sensory overload...period.
I was highly, and might I had pleasantly suprised to find out that I will have a Sig P229 w/ a built in laser issued to me as a duty weapon. I will have my own take home squad and will have it to go back and forth to PTI in a couple months. During the proceedings today they informed me of my right to shut the FOOK up while on probation until told otherwise basically..(I laughed a bit at that one) but I know its true. I am going to be spending a lot of time w/ the deputy chief who has been there a long time so he can show me the ropes so to speak. I was told I will probably spend up to 3 weeks in the communications room as well...which is fine and well because they are going to be my lifeline when I get on my own. I am SO DAMNED EXCITED yet SCARED a little bit. I want to do well, and I guess its probably just nerves.
This still hasnt sunk in yet. I would have posted this in the rrookie corner but I dont have the current LEO thing on my profile or wahtever. speaking of which..how do you get that changed??

CONGRATULATIONS! Can I ask how many times you've tested? How old are you and how was your background? just curious because I'm trying like hell for a job and it feels like time is running out! I'm 31 so I'm testing for police AND fire positions. I realized (maybe a little late) that I'd like a career doing something positive and maybe make a difference if I can. What I wouldn't give to be in your shoes right now! Maybe I'll be lucky enough to post the same news in mid april when the testing process that I'm involved in now is over. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS! They don't call cops americas finest for nuthin'

Stick in there. I got outa school in Dec of '05. I have been testing since then and began this process in December of last year. I am 25 and I have a traffic ticket as well as a no proof of insurance ticket. Two parking tickets as well. Thats all though.
All I can tell you is to stick in there and test EVERYWHERE. I tested in lexington ky, Cape girarduea Mo, Carbondale, Wheaton, St Charles, ISP, Elgin-2x (all in IL) and Madison WI. I think I might be forgetting a couple maybe...
Its a Long, TOUGH road. I am no where near to being outa the woods yet.

Murphysboro....I am not flaunting it though. In my minds eye..its best to be modest all ya know?
I will be driving a '97 crown vic to start out...gotta ride in style ya know! lol
They were talking about having me even do my 40 hours before I get to the academy.
In regards to be a probationary officer...my social life just went from being a 80 to about a 10. But thats just fine with me.

Ritchie, advice...many States and agencies will hire one and can work them as an Officer, sometimes up till 1 year and then send them to the Academy. Louisiana does this and South Carolina as well. Might want to do some research before posting whether this member is a fake or not.

TN as well, smaller towns tend to do this though.
Congrats.

I read a article a couple months back about exactly that. I researched it and appearantly scores of states do that. There are a few states you can be on the street for 5 years before your required to attend an academy, CRAZY BRO!! I hope I'm never in a dicey situation with one of them as my back up.
Oh yeah, I don't have to worry about that, I'm in CA.

Not anymore
Yeah so it happened today. I was on my one year probationary period and they let me go because I went out lastnight, and there was an "odor of alcohol" on my person and had roughly .01 on the breathalyzer. Thing is, I was not even on duty this morning. I Had court for an hour and a half. I drove my own personal vehicle into work today, was freshly showered, shaved, and in a clean pressed uni. My eyes were red/bloodshot...whatever you prefer. Other then that I guess I looked as good as you can for being up at 7am in the morning when your used to sleeping till 1pm.
I was upset at first...but then after I called a bunch of the guys that I am friends with who are also cops....they told me not to worry about it. They said pretty much the same thing..that being "they wanted to can you so they did...there was nothing you could do about it."
I tink one of the partial reason's they "disliked" me was because I was outspoken about how the old *** fleet of squads needed to be updated. I am talking about 96 and 97 models in there. The newest I beleive they have is an 01....??? Lets not mention how one of the cars died on me in the middle of a road a few days ago.
Then one of the SGT's saw me typing on the forum here a few nights ago about ISP...he probably read my post and saw that I plan on leaving for ISP whenever I get the chance. I am sure that did not help me either.
I guess what irks me the most in the end is there have been numerous instances of guys getting away with a whole hell of a lot worse then I ever did..and nothing happened to them ever.

you guys are right.
I should have done more research.
But here is my opinion on "this guy"
Police officer : Well Trained, Professional
This guy: No training, No prior Experience, Not even Prior military.
Police Officer: Mature enough to know what constitutes being "on duty"
This guy: Does not know that being in court is being on Duty
Police officer: Knows not to have alcohol in their system when performing in some kind of official capacity.
This guy: WELL............ read his post.
Police Officer: Takes responsibility for his actions and faces the consequences.
This guy: blames it on his "being outspoken", blames it on not used to waking up early, points fingers elsewhere saying so and so did something worse.

Darn, Like I said, I'm sure glad this drunk wasn't backing me up. Ritchie, Your last post is spot on. He violated all the things that "TRAINED" officers know not to do, right up to the blaming other things/people for your screw-up's. Who drinks so much that they smell the next day(after shower), especially when you know you have court.

Being on duty for court is as clear cut as it can get, as a police officer you are always being looked at from different angles. And for a officer to show up to court or get ready to attend court with a BAC of anything but .00 shows great disrespect for the court system.

i doubt any of that dudes story is true. since when do they issue handguns with laser sights? i've NEVER seen or heard of that... i think he's FOS. when i was on the road, you couldn't even put your own sights on - liability issue.

You'd be surprised what you can get away with in a small agency. My first department (6 officers) would let you buy pretty much whatever equipment you wanted. When we traded up for new weapons, we got laser sights, even issued one to the brand new dude. Want your own night sights put on? No problem, if you can afford it, do it. :D

I've been on the job for 18 years. Over the last 2 1/2 months, I have worked every shift we have at the station due to transfers, and I'm the senior sergeant. I'm still 1/2 hour to 1 hour early for work every day, sometimes with a BIG ol' steming cup o' Starbucks :D

indiana allows 1 year after hire to attend the academy...many places here depending on the timeline will do at least start FTO first
