Oceanside by far. They have some of the best pay for Southern California and thier patrol cars are top totch!

Escondido is a growing city with a huge meth problem and they have take home cars, and I think Carlsbad requires a degree not to mention it's on the beach like Oceanside.

they are small agencies so are harder to get on. try the larger agencies. O-side is probably the toughest with lots of action.

You apply for all three, and hope one of them picks you up.

Oceanside has planned to increase staffing to focus on some gang enforcement, so there may be some opportunities, but they are also having some money issues.

I think Chula Vista is the highest paid right now.

Oceanside (with their raises over the last year or so) is the highest paid in the county at $6285 base pay top step monthly. Lots of gang issues as you mentioned and O'side has always been notorious for never seeming to have money. Chula Vista is second now with Escondido a close third I believe.

Original poster..... you need to branch out and apply to more than those three agencies. They do not hire a lot of officers at the same time and have been picking up laterals so the opportunities are even smaller. Try other departments as well and see who will pick you up. You can always lateral later or who knows you may end up finding a better department.

Escondido still works under the good ol boys policy. Oceanside is a great dept try them. Back in the day Carlsbad Police where glorified security gaurds. From what I understand now is that they are a top notch Pd in North County.

What about SDSO? We need hundreds of deputies.

he could make the same at the local walmart me thinks. I would love to work in san diego, but the sunshine tax would leave me in a 2 room apt with roomies for a long long tmie...

As of 6/22/07 I will make $79,987 (http://dsasd.org/wages.html) per year gross. That comes out to $6665 per month gross. How much does Escondido, Oceanside and Carlsbad make?

i'm assuming that salary is LE and not C/D deputy? are you top step with all the perks? and not including OT? that's pretty good... i'd advise the poster to try a large agency cuz there's lot of opportunities for growth. and plus if you don't like the brass or people then you can transfer to another station. can't do that at small agencies.

Apply to each of them. If you are qualified and squared away those agencies hire enough recruits each year for you to get hired by one of them. O'side hires the most probably, but Escondido had a handful come out of the January academy too.

the avg So.Cal agency pay is between$50K to $80K/yr wth some topping $90Ks after bonuses, longevity. The most important thing to do is actually GET hired to a Dept that the applicant wants to work for-large or small ,if the dept is sucking, you'll feel the effects, and thats one thing you CAN'T run from.I make $80K gross and still have yet to apply for the 3% POST bonus my dept offers, yet still make at least 100K/yr every yr(but then again, almost every copper in my county with my time on the job, despite different Depts, makes that much a yr or damn close!).our next raise(10.25%) will put me in the hi $80Ks /low 90s,but that still not as important as having a "good work environment" and decent benefits to back you.Bottom line- if you can't see yourself "Retiring" from that dept,or living in that community-thats NOT the Dept for you to apply to................
