View Full Version : Alcoholic sibling a problem?
aftermath

Two questions. First, my brother is/was an alcoholic. I don't keep up with him much except to know he was suppose to do AA, but didn't complete it. Also, he's had DUI's, suspended license, etc. I put it on my "things we should know" part of the applications. This a problem? Also, criminal damage to property as a juvi, 13 years ago, still a problem? I list it regardless for that "just incase they ask" area.

Ok, is the cdtp yours or his? If it is yours, yes, it needs to be disclosed. I am not following why you are putting something your brother is doing on your applications. I am not about lying or hiding things, but I am not seeing the importance of your brother's activities. Having served on hiring boards, I would not put you at the top of my list if you have family problems because I would worry what you would do if you come across him on a call. I would want to know about you and what you can do for my agency, not what your brother is doing wrong in his life.

It's my cdtp. I asked that for the same reason they would ask if your roommate did something illegal. My brother has had warrants out for him for skipping out on court appointed AA and I wanted to make his situation known simply to let the BI know about him and that yes, it is his life. If I'm an officer, and I pulled him over for DUI, you better believe I'd slap his *** in cuffs and jail him. My decisions are mine, yes, but I don't want his mishaps to come back on me at some point if I can just say this is how it is now. I'm still questioning it though, so thank you for the other POV.
Ps. The cdtp was dismissed for no witness/evidence, but I still listed it since it happened.

You don't get to choose your family. You can choose who you hang out with, and what you do. Disclose the juvenile arrest and case disposition.

Yeah, disclose everything. My family was quite the opposite of the Brady bunch, and I'd had an incident when I was a child where I blew up a mailbox with an M80, they just look for how you've dealt with/learned from those things... didn’t hinder my being considered at all.

So then it's not necessary to list anything concerning him even if he's had warrants and such for him? Just trying to cover all my bases.

gang member, parolee, convict? yes.
I have a highschool classmate that works as a SA for the FBI. His Daddy got popped for Defrauding the Feds in a HUD Housing Scheme and he didn't have any issues with the FBI......and they are the hardest Federal LE Agency to get on.
He disclosed it when he applied.......they looked into it and realized that he wasn't involved (we were both in the Army then)....and didn't have an issue.

Sounds good. Guess I'll leave it in and if the department has no issue, I'm good. If they do, well, I'll address it as best as possible.

My friend applied for LAPD, got pretty far into the process - what got him nixed? He lived with his brother who's a felon... Said friend isn't too happy with his brother these days...

Not to bang on LAPD....but I have heard a lot of horror stories from folks that have tried to go through the process and were treated like criminals....even a few that were already LEOs elsewhere trying to make the jump out there.....

He subsequently applied for the SO, and other smaller agencies in the area, they all rejected him for that reason as well (so he says).
LAPD is a last resort for me - They're offering a signing bonus these days - so does the military, hmmmm...

If you were living with them and/or hanging out with them it might be....as it shows what type of people you associate with....
