Suit......button down shirt (that matches and is pressed)....socks that match your suit....and highly shined shoes.....

I would suggest a dark blue or gray suit.....with a conservative tie.....and a white or light blue shirt.

A white shirt that fits. Can't count the number of interviews I've done where the app shows up with a shirt neck 2 size too big and looks sloppy. They re-enforce the saying of can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Also learn how to tie a good knot and wear it snug against the collar, not loose and hanging down. If you don't know how to tie a double windsor then have someone show you.
When you shine your shoes don't forget the edges. Your shoes should be compatible with your suit. No navy blue or black suit and brown shoes.
Nothing in your pocket, no loose change and no big ring of keys. No pocket clip on knives in a suit. Leave your cell phone, pager, blackberry, whatever in the car.

If you don't have common sense on what to wear, then you seriously need to think about something else. I mean honestly, would you go in jeans and a t-shirt?

I've seen it happen before....a couple of times.....with college educated folks applying for LEO jobs.....

I did see one of them get tossed out of an interview about 20 seconds into it by my CPT..... :D

If your decision making for something as tedious as THAT is a problem, I could just imagine what would happen on the street.

Who knows. It was for Cook County. The interviewer just looked at him like he was a moron but he still got in.

I just help conduct a couple of interviews today for my replacement (and another slot we have free in our office). Here's what I have to offer.....

1. Show up on time....better yet...show up 10-15 mins early. It shows you can manage your time. The agency may need you to go through some sort of security procedures to get into the area where you are interviewing or they may need you to fill some more paperwork out.

2. Show up dressed appropriately (as stated above).

3. Go over yourself before you meet your interviewer(s). Check for lent, make sure your shoes are still shined, and make sure your tie is on correctly. Talk off all jewelery and leave you cellphone, keys (if you can), knife, etc....out of your pocket. Showing up with a lot of "Blink" on is not what folks are looking for in a LE candidate......

4. When you get there, make sure you have ID. Some places have to log folks in and give them a building pass.

5. When you are waiting, go over yourself again.....and don't act like a tool (and yes....I do watch cameras sometimes before I go fetch people and I suspect others do as well....nothing like watching some guy pick his nose or dig at his junk....then try to shake my hand..... ).

6. Spit your gum/breathmints out and make sure your hands are clean.....I had to shake some guys hand today that was slimy with sweat. Ick....

7. When you meet your interviewer or whoever comes get you, shake their hand and intro yourself. Do it again as needed. Make sure your hands are clean.....whipe them on your pants if you have to.....that does go a long way as well.

8. When you are in the interview, look at the people you are talking to. Don't talk in slang, don't look down, and keep your hands in your lap or on the table.....and sit up in the chair. Answer the question as best you can....and if you don't know something....don't BS.....we can tell when you are lying.

9. Thank your interviewer(s) when you are done and shake their hands again.

10. Make sure you get address or have info to send a thank you letter. If they ask why you want the info, tell them why. Yes, a letter goes a long ways.....even with a LE job.

11. Let some time pass before you start calling to check your status. Calling a couple of days afterwards isn't going to help you at all.

12. Relax the best you can during the entire process. Yes, it's stressful....but you need to take a deep breath and relax.....I had a guy today that was scared straight and it drove me and my boss nuts.

I just had my oral interview for Indiana State police not to long ago and a guy who was also waiting to interview, just like me, was talking to me non stop and of course putting on the moves, which mind you were horrible. Anyway, he had on a nice suit, nice shoes, look good, but one thing....THE DUDE DIDNT SHAVE! He looked like he was out drinking all night, woke up late, didnt shower, and just threw on his nice suit. I almost said something to him, I came sooo close to calling him out on it, but I didn't. So my advice, if you have just the least hint of stubble....SHAVE ANYWAY!

Anything wrong with a clip on tie? Like the new ones they have a JCPenny. You just pull the strip down and put it on your neck. You see anything wrong with wearing those to a interview? God BBless.

Um....in my opinion, as long as you cant notice that its a clip on sure....but if you can, I would go with the regular old fashion tie. When you go to the academy, its military style. I dont believe they have clip ons in the military. Just my thought. Your best bet, regular tie. Practice tieing it, its just like putting a saddle on a horse, thats how I learned how. :)

I have a clip on tie right now for my Service Dress, its awesome, I don't even have to tie it. I can tie a tie (did it for 4 years in High School), but they don't end where they are supposed to for the military appearance, so I bought a 5 dollar clip-on in the same style/color as my issued Blues tie.

As long as you can't see the clip, you will be fine.....

Most think it's kinda tacky to use a clip on.......

Yeah I always end up googling the internet trying to learn how to tie a tie lol and wasting time, I need to learn anyway. But anyways, what I meant was a zipper tie, a lot bit more classic looking and easier to put on than a clip on.

Check it out. http://www.thesilktiefactory.com/zipperties9.html

Here are some images. You think I can get away with these? I'm not advertising these ties either, just asking for opinion.

I had a fiery red tie that I wore in High School (with a green sport coat). Miss that old thing. I always tied ties back then, since no one gave a crap about what it looked like. But when it really started to matter, I bought a clip on (plus I heard from somewhere, probably someone in my Explorers group that clip-ons are ideal for cops). I never wear my Blues on duty, so I don't know.

Red tie with green sports coat? The fashion police should have pulled you over! :p Am I going to have to make you take pictures of your clothes and have you show them to me so I can properly dress you? :D

I don't dress like that anymore. I wear BDUs all the time (and when I am off I am usually chillin in a pair of light "sports pants", and a German Bundeswehr shirt). I went to an all-guys high school, so we wanted to see how far we could stretch the dress regs. I had a friend that wore a bright orange sport jacket, red, black, and green plaid dress drousers, and bright, shiny, crimson shoes. I tended to wear shades of purples, browns, blacks, greens.
