what would you recommend? how long is the process to get hired for LA Sheriff and LAPD? how long is the wait in the jail for LA Sheriff to get to patrol? does LA Sheriff work 5 8's at all stations? any idea if they will go to 4 10's or 3 12's???

GO COUNTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The process is fairly quick with LASD, of course depends on your background issues, unsure about PD. Wait in jail depends on patrol stations on wish list. Although, I hear that it's getting to the point where recruits might be going straight to AV stations right out of the academy. Other fast picking station include Malibu/Lost Hills and Transit Services (not a station, yet an assignment that fulfills patrol requirement).
Some LASD stations are on 4/10's, others I hear are on 3/8's and one 16 hour day equaling a four day work week. Not sure if W. Hollywood has 3/12's still. Also, not sure if there are any 5/8 stations still.

You shouldn't be applying to a sheriffs department if you feel that way. You will be in the jails for years not months. Don't let anyone tell you different.

As someone stated, if you pick Palmdale Sta. or Lancaster Sta., you can go straight from the academy. Lomita Sta. has taken deps who only worked 6 mos. in custody. Idt Sta. or Lkd Sta., you'll be waiting a while. Com or Cen Sta., wont be as long.

Worked an o/t in custody a few weeks ago. Deps were talking about the list. Dont remember how long they were saying they would be in there. I do remember their numbers weren't that high on the list to go out for Cpt or Cen Stations. Ant I think they had been out of the academy for less than a year. Industry Station is one of the longest waits. Its a pretty busy station and alot of people live out that way.

That's great!!! My wait at a downtown LA facility was 6 years and two months, and that was to go to a FOR II station! Of course, I left CU Div over a decade ago now...

LAPD or LASD???? both are good choices.Pros and cons-LASD (custody-both pro and con.Long period of custody, but lots of cash OT$$$$,.ability to "learn" street culture in a controlled environment, time to con't and study-possible college degree or tactics/penal code and criminal legal statutes)-pay $54K to $92K starting .LAPD?(fast track processing for "clean" appicants, low stress-college environment academy,21 geographical divs to work patrol in ,rapid promotion ability.cons-"consent decree" and lots of "PC" areas that could leave serious bad taste in some officers mouths, aggressive disciplinary system)-pay $53K to $89K/yr,before speciality and bonus pay

There is still plenty of o/t in custody. However, it definitely slowed down for outside deps working o/t in custody.

I rode along with Cerritos and they were 5/8, as are most. They, LASD, use 4/10s at unpopular stations to lure deputies to patrol there. There is less of a spot light there too. LAPD is hiring ultra fast right now, about 3-4 months. LASD will take their sweet time. 3/12s at the PD. 8 month Academy vs a traditional 6 month. Except for PT and Inspection, there isnt any stress. I mean, you will get snapped at if you break the military form, but nothing to cry about.

8 months seems like a long time to be in an academy? why is it so long?can i apply with lapd at 20?do u get a pay raise after 6 months in the academy with lapd?what stations are most officers going to after the academy? how bad is it to work under the decent decree?can u still have fun with lapd?

West Hollywood, Carson, Century, Industry, and Pico Stations are 4/10's. Most other stations have a county double (3 8 hrs shifts, 1 16 hr shift). Many other stations will eventually go 4/10's. Problem with LAPD 3/12, according to my friends are that it is not a fixed 3/12. Days off always change. Guess it could work for some people. My buddies aren't crazy about the constant rotation. Sometimes they're working 5-6 straight 12 hrs shifts.

From my the way things look now...Palmdale, Lancaster, Crescenta Valley, Malibu/Lost Hills, TSB (Transit Services-buses & trains), possibly Lomita choices will move you out within a year. Crescenta Valley supposedly pulled a body two months after graduation.
These are my observations: Industry, Walnut and San Dimas have the longest list of deps. Probably the longest waits. Cerritos seems to be a long wait too. The fast, hardcore stations of: Century, ELA and Lennox seem just a tad shorter on the wait. Pico, Carson & W Hollywood are next. Temple, Lakewood, Norwalk and Compton are probably shorter than the latter two. I'm unsure of Marina Del Rey, Santa Clarita, Community College and Altadena.
What it comes down to is a mix of is the deparment doing movement, number of bodies on the list to that station (including extensions) and availability at that particular station.
Unless you pick the top ones mentioned, prepare to do years in custody, court or transportation.

Not as much ot as before. You can't sign up anymore and get all the shifts you request. Some people only get half of their requested spots. Also, I haven't heard of anyone getting drafted these days. But they do announce the next shift of ot over the mic almost on a daily basis.

retirement is not that bad, considering the percentage is almost like 3@50. of course you have to wait until 55 to max out on retirement. you also have to realize not all 3@50 agencies offer life time medical after retirement. but you must have 25 yrs of service.
also consider this, when/if you burn out on patrol you can always go back to custody/courts.

So what if one wants to work at Catalina? Is that an insanely long wait? Do they make you pay for the ferry ride every day that you work?

I believe anyone that wants to work at Avalon needs to be a patrol dep for two years first....From what I understand the county gives some kind of allowance for the ride over. I just don't think it includes a daily round trip.

I doubt they get charged at all to ride over.

Actually, seems like they're always looking for guys to work there. They also have seasonal deps that work there for the summer on loan to Avalon Sta. You live there. They give deps a cost of living increase (11%) while they're there.

ElDiabloJoe...
Thanks for the inquiry. The LASD application process for me took five months from start to finish. I'm on active duty right now and my intentions is to go to the academy while I'm on terminal leave, so that's why I signed up for the June 2007 date. More than anything else I'm trying to double-dip my pay from the military and from L.A. county.

Ahhhh, makes sense! I did the same thing when I joined up, I deferred academy for 3-6 months to finish my undergrad (Agency only paid extra if you came to them with the full degree, not if you earned it while working).
