drop CJ and do business or something you can fall back on. you can have any degree. doesn't have to be CJ. some agencies suggest CJ , but it's useless. you'll learn more in the academy

SMCC is an excellent excellent place to get an associate degree. i went there, teachers are awesome, places are fun, seriously, one of the best criminal justice associate programs around. USM's transfer things IS NOT for criminal justice though. I tried doing it, send me a private message if u want more info. i highly recommend smcc though. i go to husson college now in south portland, where i am working on my BA criminal justice degree. husson accepted 57/61 credits. and usm wouldnt take that many.

Bwah-hah-hah, then you, my friend, are barking up the wrong tree.

Criminal Justice in NOT an industry in which you have much more than a miniscule shot in h*ll of making a lot of money.

Perhaps you should try the real money trail, entrepreneurship, or the better-than-average living you can make in the professions (medicine, law, engineering).

EDJ

just like what EDJ said, with CJ you ain't gonna be making crap
PO, sheriffs, corrections, juvies, probation etc. they don't make a lot of money.

if you want money do the business, accounting, law, engineering, med route
the closest thing i can think of where you can work with juvies or prisoners is a psych and make decent money

Helping kids and becoming a swat officer are two oppostie ends of the justice system spectrum. Figure out what you really want to do before you move any further.

I say major what your interested in, and your interest and desire will lead you to the right job with the right salary. If you want to be a game warden, major in marine biology or wildlife biology. Point is, many people join a major they aren't interested in but only get it in for the money, and their lack of interest causes them not to study as they should. Then their grades may lack or they end up being miserable, so if it's criminal justice, major in criminal justice. There are probably many criminal justice majors who make a lot of money. Only you determine that by your progression in your first job, and post-graduate decisions. I would get a masters degree that really helps. As far as criminal justice, I believe I read in announcement that Diplomatic Security pays extra for criminal justice majors (graduate I believe) and the DEA also.

Criminal Justice also is a good way to help children/kids. Depends on what you do, many officers go to classrooms and tutor, give out toys during holidays. Check out sociology too. Do what's your hearts desire and God will send you the job and money, trust me. The FBI has community outreach specialists, victim advocate and etc who specialize in the sociological tasks your interested in, and criminal justice degrees are favorable with those programs. But please get a masters degree if you can, but you don't have too.

Also get these books, you can buy it from the users from cheap unless you want it from amazon.

Also, do a google search for "criminal justice jobs," or "criminal justice major jobs" etc. Don't know if this helped or not, but do what you feel your called to do. God Bless.

you can still help kids with CJ. maybe a minor in psych or double major.
you can try juvie counselor. or be a cop and work as a school resource officer or juvie officer (if the agencies have them). those would be good law enforcement positions that work with kids.

Hmmm, there are many types of psychology. Psychology may help you to get into the minds of children and understand them. But you'll learn a whole lot of other stuff also. Sociology is more broad. Have you considered social work?
But again the choice is up to you.
I don't know what our majors or programs your college offers, but please look at these websites and you'll be on your way.

http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/majors/majorSearch.asp (Please go to the get some advice page, it should be helpful for you).

You'll be okay in whatever you do, just give it your best. Also keep a clean record especially if you want to work with kids. God Bless your journey.

what are you all thinking good money is? california cops with a degree start at 60k or so. thats pretty damn good to me.

Cj degree won't gurantee you a job in LEO. I always felt it was a waste of time getting that degree. I think accounting would be good. FBI looks for those.

I am currently in the process of getting my bachelors in CJ, I will be recieving it in MAY, and I honestly feel, that this degree is not going to be helping me much, in anything other than being a cop.

In three months I will have a BA in Criminology (a little different than criminal justice) and I would definitely choose the major over again. If you're looking to get into anything with law enforcement it will help, otherwise it's not going to do much for you. Everyone saying that they don't think their CJ degree will help them get a job other than law enforcement is absolutely right, just like a business degree won't do anything for you except help you start a business, a engineering degree won't help you do anything but become an engineer, and a drama major won't help you do...well much of anything. But basically the point is if you're looking to get into law enforcement or even law school, a CJ or criminology major is the way to go. Furthermore, if you're interested in law and law enforcement, the major will be way more interesting for you than a sociology or poli sci major just based on the fact that you're studying your interests.

no matter what your major is with the FBI, you still have to have 3 or 4 years relevant work experience first, so the major isn't going to matter much by then. Plus, if you're primary interest in law enforcement and law, I dare anyone to get through four years of accounting classes.

If you want to work with kids be a psych major. sociology won't do much for you, its pretty general. psych can get you into social work, counseling, or grad school to become a clinical psychologist, research with children through whatever school you go to (if the school is big enough).

if you wanna do anything with counseling, go psych. if you want to incorporate psych and law in your career path, double major in criminology and psychology.

is psychology hard to learn ?

ask80
03-12-2007, 11:51 PM
learning psych will vary. just like asking someone "is math easy to learn?" for me, yea. others no. taking psych courses, you'll do a lot of reading and writing papers. but if you like it , then shouldn't be a problem.
i'm sure you'll need a masters for a forensic psych. yes they have juvie counselors.

you should talk to a college counselor if possible or maybe obtain some internships

What if they don't pick you to be a cop? What then? I hate the way the employment system works in LAW ENFORCEMENT.

There are sme other LE jobs that it will help you land. Probation and Parole officer jobs are not bad, usually better paid w/ less headaches than cops. I am currently in hiring process for GBI, and they prefer (but dont require) a CJ degree. It will help you move up in departments also, like going from a cop to an investigator.
