Just really quick, I have a poor credit history and all of my debt was accumulated within a year. I also have an underaged drinking charge that was expunged but I have already informed them of that. I have nothing to hide and have been as upfront as possible, for one they will find the information out anyway and secondly it is just the right thing to do.
With debt and an alcohol related charge are those two things that would be difficult to over come in the hiring process. I am currently 23 and the debt and charge were both when I was 20. I am currently in a job where I come into contact with money and my work history has been solid, always ended up in management wherever I worked. The only problem I see is my credit and alcohol related charge.

underage drinking charge won't be big deal. i'm sure a lot of officers have drank alcohol before turning 21.
credit maybe.. depends on circumstances. gambling? medical bills? but if you're credit has improved and your financial problems are gone then it shouldn't be a big deal. as long as you haven't been super delinquent, and have collections hounding you.
so IMO no worries. unless you're applying to some agency that has super high and strict standards...

Why does credit history matter?

1) It shows responsibility
2) It may also show that the Officer could be turn dirty to get the money to get out of debt

Ah, I have bad credit history because I had to stay in the hospital on two seperate occasions with ambulance rides and everything ... and I had no health insurance so yeah I have some debt, but I guess when it comes time for my BI I'll just have to explain to them what happened.
Also furthermore, in 05 I was put into the hospital on two seperate occasions for seizures, they ran numerous amounts of tests on me, catscans, mris, eegs, and everything said I was fine, the doctors told me if i didn't have them for a year I'd be fine and that it wouldn't happen again. I wonder if that will have an effect on me.
And I haven't had one since, But I guess I should try and get checked up just to be on the safe side eh?

The alcohol charge is nothing bad at all. I have one too, and an investigator told me it actually might help me cuz it shows im someone who has been around the block. Departments are not really looking for squeeky clean goody two shoes people. They expect people to screw up every once in a while. If you had 5 charges or more, then thatd be a different story.
And my friend who is 20, got hired by a town and he got an alcohol charge 3 weeks before his oral board.
So you got nothing to worry about.
Credit, I dont know anything about.
Take it easy
