One of our retired officers went to Bosnia for a year on a Dyncorp mission with the U.N. He had a good time. They were unarmed but were well protected by UN troops. Their role was as advisors and consultants. Their biggest problem were the cops from the third world countries who stayed in the same hotel who kept building cooking fires in their hotel rooms.

The same officer came home unscathed and reapplied with Dyncorp to go to East Timor with the UN. He dropped out of training early. He said the program had changed and they now had to attend a boot camp before they could deploy. He dropped out after three days of training as he said he was getting too old for this stuff. He got the impression that the UN missions were going to become less advisory and more hands on.

Another aquaintance went to Haiti a few years ago with the UN mission. They were armed and did more hands on police work.

Their biggest problem was keeping the local cops from killing and torturing the crooks (Hmmmmm...). He had a friend, ex-NYPD I believe, get killed in a firefight with some crooks.

$76k tax free is a lot of money but don't think there aren't sacrifices. Remember you have to live there, eat the local food, and drink the local water.

This duty is fine if you're the soldier-of-fortune type; the less family and loved ones, the better, etc. As previously indicated, the money is good but you WILL EARN IT! Haven't been there myself (too old and too much family) but talked to some who have. RW

Read the fine print........I know a guy in Kosovo right now. Out of the money he's making, they have to pay for their hotel. It costs MUCH more than that place is worth. Even at$35 a night, it's too much for a rom with broken windows etc.

Hey, maybe some of the assignments are great, but maybe they aren't.
