I am looking for some input on policing style from east coast to west coast. I am from Michigan and going to be interviewing for department in west coast later next week. I am trying to be as prepared as possible on in policing differences from west to east. I hear that west coast agencies are more progressive yet more laid back vs east. I would like to hear of some possible difference from people that may have worked in east then went west about difference in departments. Any info will be a great help so I can be prepared for interview.
I can only comment on what I've been told by officers on my dept that came from the east coast. They said the only thing that is better on the west coast is the pay and cost of living. The equipment tends to be inferior and the generally liberal attitude of most agencies out west sucks (can you get disciplined for swearing OFF-DUTY where you work?). We have several officers from Chicago, NYC, and DC. All of them have said they regretted moving out west. But like I said, I haven't experienced it for myself, I'm just relaying what other officers have told me. Hope that helps...

Probably depends also what you mean by west. Northwest is different from SoCal or Northern Ca

LOLOLOLOL!! Yeah, especially if you work for a Dept that has NO problem with "dirty" shootings",letting assaults on prisoners SLIDE,coppers taking $$ of local hoodlums etc.Funny- but i've experienced just the opposite.Alot of eastcoast coppers MISS their friends and families, but will tell you in a minute that they would NEVER go back to that "misery"-I currently work with a former Pittsburgh PD ,and a Newark,NJ PD copper-They "miss" the wild days ,but are happy with the weather,BETTER pay and the BETTER equipment( out here we complain about any patrol car that has over 50K in mileage out on the odometer; my NJ bud laughed and said that would have been a commanders vehicle as the units they had were so worn down).Don't know where you get your info "meat" ,but its all up to the individual, and from what I've seen-the Western States have got the east beat in terms of living conditions, work environment ,pay($32K/yr to start in NYC vs. $55K/ in L.A.???),our training standards are higher, and we have a HIGHER supporting tax base in many western states( Texas, and AZ are really booming, with Nev,Colo,Ore following in temrs of population growth, economy). Is the 9th circuit a "downer" for cops ? yeah-but the people who pay the bills ( cut our checks) have a RIGHT to say what we will and will not DO( to them).Having visited several cities on the eastern shoreboard,i respect the coppers there and what they deal with, but i won't just sit here and let you be suckered into that "horse pucky" you've been fed by your "eastern buds"...........
LOLOLOLOL!! Don't know where you get your info "meat"
Whooaaa!! Settle down, little buddy!! I specifically made the disclaimer that the info I mentioned wasn't experienced first-hand. It was only what was told to me by more than a dozen officers that moved over from the east coast. Not a single one is happy with their move. I can tell you that my dept is just now getting equipment that a lot of depts on the east coast had 7-8 years ago. And I also specifically mentioned that they were happy with the pay (70k a year at my dept for a patrol officer) and cost of living over here, but it was the actual POLICING they were unhappy with.
Clearly I struck a nerve with you or somehow offended you with my "opinion" but that is no reason for you to get all worked up and make yourself look like an ***. :D
