Some states have legislation outlawing the possession and use of radar/laser detectors. Which states outlaw them and why? I've been curious about this for some time, but have never heard too many opinions about it.
Oh, and Ohio does not outlaw them. Hell, Cincinnati Microwave makes the damn things!

I believe either W. Virginia or Virginia (not sure which one or perhaps even both) out law them.
Hey Irish, I take it you are from OH. Me too.. Cincinnati here.

Connecticut also outlaws them. Still curious as to why...
RaychelR, I'm up in Kettering, but I grew up in Fairfield....

VA, Wash. D.C. and CT have state laws against them. Also, remember that they're illegal in all states in Commercial Motor Vehicles.

OK in VT, but because you play the game, IMHO, a sure way to get a ticket when pulled over.

Our judge usually tacks a little bit more on the fine for you, if you take it to court, when he hears you had one.

Virginia uses their radar detectors to catch you with radar more than they use the radar to catch you speeding. They used to keep them but collected so many they have stopped that in most counties.
they r ok in Michigan. but u never get a break on a ticket when u have one.

A correction to my post above, Virginia uses radar detector-detectors. They send out a beam and some can even pick up on your detector if it turned off.
Here in Iowa they are legal the only thing illegal is the radar jammers. You more than welcome to use them here all you want.

Is it true that there are radar "scramblers" that really work? There's one here called the "Phaser" that is supposed to "scramble" radar making the vehicle invisible to radar. According to what I've been trained, its impossible to scramble the radar waves. Any opinions on the subject?

Some of the older units could be scrambled with things like foil. The newer ones like the HR-12 I use does not even transmit a small signal that can be picked up by expensive detectors when you press the hold switch.

If you have a choice as to which band radar to buy, go with the Ka band. Since X and K transmit on specific frequencies, detectors easily pick them up. The Ka band transmits over a range and not all detectors will even alert to them. I've tested it several times with my Ka and radar detectors.
