Can anyone working in Memphis give me some advice about the area. I'm planning a trip there in the next few months.

Thanx

I'm not a cop but I've been to Memphis.

Lock doors and windows, put chairs under doors and sleep with gun (or two).

Memphis is a huge city and in 2005 was rated 13th in the nation for violent crime. I can't see it improving in the past year or so.

We went out West on vacation a few years ago. We went through St. Louis, around Chicago, Denver and several other large cities. The only place we got lost was Memphis on the way home. We couldn't find our way out and ended up spending the night. Scariest night of my life. We beat a trail out of there early the next morning. About 30 miles down the road I realized I left my glasses in the room. I don't wear them all the time so I didn't miss them for a while. I bought new glasses rather than go back.

Sorry to be so negative but I've lived in TN all my life and that was the first and last time I will be in Memphis. People that actually live there might not see it that way but I'm a small town girl and big cities scare me.

As long as you are there you might as well visit Graceland. :-)

I enjoyed the city and didn't get any negative feelings from it at all. Well more so than I get from DC. Do you belong to AAA? If so, call them up and ask them to send you one of their travel guides. It really just depends on what you're into.

LOL, I don't plan to. I don't intentionally go anywhere that doesn't honor my carry permit.

The main thing that unnerved me in Memphis was the sirens and gun shots in the middle of the night. I know gun shots when I hear them because I've been shooting since I was 12. The sirens went all night long. I finally got up and peeked out the window and there were cops and blue lights running everywhere. It might have been a one time thing but it was enough to convince me.

Ranked 13th? I thought we were recently ranked #1 in violent crimes. Anyhow, I am a cop in Memphis, and I can tell you that there are places to avoid. Melinda advised to visit Graceland while you are here, and I would disagree. Graceland is in South Memphis, which is a very high crime area. Daytime might be ok, but stay away in the night time hours. Downtown is relatively safe with a high police presence. Beale Street is well known for its night life, and as long as you dont wander to far off the beaten path, you will be fine. Like any decent sized city, crime is farely prevelant here. If you stay alert of your surroundings, you will be fine. If it looks like a bad area, it probably is. Areas to avoid at all costs are areas South of South Parkway, and North of North Parkway. These are bad areas, with no real tourists activity........unless getting jacked and possibly killed is your idea of Tourism. Joking aside, Memphis is not that bad! I have lived here most of my 39yrs, and I'm still alive. Feel free to pm me with any questions. I will answer as honestly as I can. Oh, one quesion! Why, of all the places to plan a vacation, are you coming to Memphis? Not bashing you, just seems like an odd place to plan a vacation around. Good Luck!

We must have been in South Memphis then. :-) I've never been to Graceland and don't plan to go but a lady I work with goes every year and always asks if I want to go with her. Not me! I'm not an Elvis fan. That one trip was enough to last me a life time.

The chart I looked at was from 2005. I recall hearing about Memphis moving up in the ratings recently but didn't pay much attention as to how much. Nashville was #16. This chart was for cities 250,000 people or more. Knoxville and Chattanooga are not on the chart of cities with the most violent crime, thank goodness.
