Ok i have a few questions. if any CHP officers could help that would be great.thanks
1. If i ask for Los Angeles, San Diego (and other Border Division) will i have a good chance of getting it?
2.are they going to 3 12's or 4 10's? or staying on 5 8's
3. How many weeks is the academy?
4. does the state/agency pay the PERS contribution, or does it come out of officers check?
thanks for the help!

You get sent to an area based on how high the last 4 digits of your SSN are-- higher is better. Not many people ever go to Border right out the door... that and they are still on 5-8's is why I turned down my academy package after I went through the process.
Their new contract has their retirement taken out of their salary. The academy is 6 months-ish. check out chpforums.com it's a gold mine of info

The scales are 12's. And a couple areas are "testing" 12's out.

He works out of Westminster. No scales. On 12's. Must be one of the test stations.

so damn what is the percentage that the officers are paying out of their salary? i knew there was some kind of catch to this...i find it hard to believe. cuz a lot of agencies pick up the officers contribution...so where are most the officers going? my BIGGEST fear is that i will get sent to the Bay Area (then i could kiss my whole paycheck goodbye)

1. Chances are you will have a good chance at either Los Angeles area offices, or northern Border Division offices (Such as Santa Ana, and Westminster). Heck, you could end up getting Blythe if you want it. That area pops up almost every other class.
2. We are currently testing the 3/12 schedule. It's a one year test phase and will end December 31st, 2007. I'm hoping we'll keep it.
3. Currently the Academy is 27 weeks long.
4. A portion of PERS is taken out of the officers salary, and the state pays it back at the same time. So basically, you're paying for it, and the state is refunding it back to you in the same check.

what you need to know is that yes officers do pay into their own retirements, BUT they just got a raise to cover the amount they have to pay out of their own pockets, which is better because it will count towards their "highest" base pay in the end. So if they were making $5000 a month and retired at 3% at 50 working till they can get 90% they would make $4500 in retirement, now they make $5500 or whatever they now will bring home 4950. I hope this was not to confusing. Look up their new contract, its pretty cool. http://www.dpa.ca.gov/collbarg/news/bu5TAannouncement.shtm
New contract negotiated with highway patrol officers
The State has negotiated a new contract with the California Association of Highway Patrolmen to replace the contract that expired July 2, 2006. The new agreement, which covers roughly 6,400 CHP officers, runs through July 2, 2010.
Key provisions:
· The State will phase out the longstanding practice that relieved CHP officers of having to pay into their own retirement. Over the four-year contract, officers will assume full responsibility for CalPERS contributions1 currently paid by the State. During this period, their pay will increase by the amount of the contribution they must pay to CalPERS. This change reestablishes the principle that the employee share of retirement should be paid by the employee.
· Effective July 3, 2006, officers will receive a stipend equal to 3.5% of their base pay to compensate for time spent on pre- and post-shift activities such as donning protective gear, inspecting weapons and vehicles, and performing other activities integral to their job. Providing this stipend resolves a potential liability for the State stemming from recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the issue of "donning and doffing" activities.
· The annual uniform allowance will increase from $570 to $920 over the next three years, and a $25/mo. uniform cleaning allowance will be implemented effective July 3, 2006.
· The additional hourly pay officers receive for working swing and night shifts will increase over the next two years. Effective July 3, 2006, swing shifts will be paid an additional $0.80/hr.; this differential will increase to $1/hr. on July 1, 2008. (The current swing shift differential is $0.40/hr.) The night shift differential will go up to $1.30/hr., then $1.50/hr., on these same dates from the current $0.65/hr.
· Officers who suffer an extremely serious bodily injury in the line of duty, but who have not yet reached the minimum retirement age of 50, will be eligible for disability benefits as though they had reached age 50, i.e., 3 percent of salary per year of service, not to exceed 90 percent, or the current benefit level of 50 percent of salary, whichever is greater.
· Survivors of officers who die before age 50 will be allowed to choose between the existing lump sum death benefit and an alternate benefit that pays a lifetime monthly allowance. To be eligible for the alternate death benefit, the officer must have had at least 20 years of service.
· Officers who recruit a new Patrol member will receive an additional 40 hours of leave, up to 120 hours per year for three new Patrol members. This program is intended to boost CHP recruitment efforts.
· The contract will continue to provide the annual salary adjustments required by State law2 to keep highway patrol officers compensation on par with local law enforcement in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Diego.

Say 7% is taken out of your monthly pay. Then the state gives you a 7% raise to compensate for it. MikeyG76's post breaks it down pretty well.
Go here (http://www.chp.ca.gov/recruiting/html/osalary.html) for a breakdown of pay.
Also, if you want more information, goto www.chpforums.com and ask questions there, it's a great resource.
San Diego takes cadets every once in awhile. It's not a lot though. Usually 1 or 2 every other class or so. Overall, Border Division will be getting 14 new officers out of the class slated to graduate in March. 1 went to San Diego, 3 to Winterhaven, 1 to Blythe, 3 to Indio, 2 to El Cajon, 4 to Capistrano.
Santa Ana which is a 3/12 trial office usually takes cadets as well.
So far the 3/12 program is working out very well, but it's still way to early to tell. I hope it sticks.

The worst thing the CHP could have done (as it affects other departments eventually) is to agree to pay their PERS. Yeah now you got a 7% for 7% deal going (doesn't that just mean you got a 0% rasie?). What about in a few years when the CHP salary lags behind other departments and the State is in another budget crisis? You are still paying that 7% and are not getting a raise. Or what about when PERS is superfunded again? Good luck getting them to quit taking that 7% out.

The cost in the Bay Area will be a shock at first, but its not a total money sucker. Believe it or not there are still some affordable places inside the bay area, if not just right out side of it. So Cal is the same situation
