I'm going to apply to OHP and was wondering what shifts they work (12 hr, 10 hr, etc.)? Also, what firearm do they issue? And what are the back up weapon regulations/options? I realize I could wait until my ride-along and when I apply in March to find out, but I'm impatient :)

Thanks!

As far as the shifts, that depends on your assignment. As far as metro, they still do a 5/2, 8 hour shifts. I'm almost certain that all the surrounding counties that are under Troop A have the same schedule. As far as firearm, you will be issued a sig in .357 sig (not sure of model number), a remington 870 shotgun, and a AR-15 rifle. As far as back up from what 1 trooper told me, carry whatever you need to. When SHTF, the most important thing is you make it out alive. Just don't hit any innocents in the process. (Being qualified on that weapon would help a lot too!)

Awesome, thank you- that answers my questions. I've only fired a glock 9mm and springfield xd40, so I imagine the 357 will be pretty different. I really liked the glock, so I was looking into getting one for a back up.

I hear Troop A here in the OKC metro is moving to 4 and 3's. Also the issued weapon is a Sig P226 DAK (double action only) in .357 Sig.; a great gun. Good luck.

I spoke with a couple of troopers regarding the schedule. They said the 4/3 schedule was in talk, but they doubt it will happen due to the shortage of manpower.

Bulldogg, you can always qual later with a glock and carry it if that is what you want to carry.

They just issue you the sig.
