thanks for the info. being from new york, i just wondering if one laterals, do i need to complete the cali post basic course waiver first before getting hired, or get hired and then pass the waiver course? anyone know the what that process is all about? anymore info. on garden grove as far as benefits, vacation time, etc. can one buy back time there tranfering over?

I would contact the department you are looking to transfer to, they will probably have more info. Also, you can check the CA POST website:

Except for the larger agencies, most retirement programs are registered with the Public Employees Retirement System. That agency allows military buy back but not prior LEO buy back from out of state. The best thing to do, if you are vested in your current program, is to leave you money in your current system and you can use it to supplement your income when you do retire.
Also, most agencies in CA will require you to attend at least a short academy to assimilate the information on state and local laws. CA P.O.S.T does have a test you can file for and take - for a fee - to transfer and qualify for the basic certification. However, I am unfamiliar with what is on the exam and challenge.
