Red-Green Color Blindness

I need help on a question and I would appreciate it if someone can help me out here.

I wanted to know if you are disqualified to become a recruit if your red-green color blind. Are you even tested for this test?

Thank you!

(PS. if you know for OC police departments, that would be great!)

Every PD in So Cal that I have ever read the requirements of listed "Normal Color Vision". That being said some are more strict then others. Some give you the color plate test and if you fail thats it. Other will then "field test" you by showing you a color chart or asking you to identify colors in the room, etc.

I guess I shouldn't bring attention to myself, but I really wanted to know before continuing the processes.

It's going to be a real downer if this is what impedes me from becoming an offficer.

I just finished the hiring process, and in the medical they showed me a book that had number in one color, and the background in a different color. There were serveral different combos of colors (red/yellow, blue/green, ect..).

As long as you can read the number, you pass...

I don't know if that helps or not, but most PDs in CA do check for color blindness.

Crap... I think I'm red-green color blind...

If they test me I'm screwed... This is pretty disappointing... I dont know what to do because there's nothing I can do...

I attended the Oral prep seminar and they said that if you are color blind..you shouldnt keep going on because they will dq you if you are...

At least this gives me hope. I dont know if I should come out with it and ask them directly, or just keep on with the progress.

I passed the background and just need the interview with the Chief to get the conditional offer. I'm close, but might not be with this deficiency.

Keep testing, don't get discouraged. Every department is different. I am slightly red/green deficient and have a hard time with the plate tests but several departments (LAPD inc) will give you an alternate test.

With red/green color blindness you will see a number in the circle, just not the number you would see with normal color perception (normal might be '17' and red/green deficiancy may see '82'..no cheating on it). There are contacts you can wear to correct red/green color blindness, but they are red and make you look like a "devil dog" with them in. I had to wear them for the color test after I failed it and then was told I never had to wear them again if I didn't want to.

The standard plate test given here you will NOT see a different number if you are red/green defecient. You just see dots. And the x-chrome lens is prohibited by the CHP and most other agencies.

Wow, I never knew there were contacts to correct the red-green colorblindness. I think I will just see if I get a conditional offer after the interview with the Chief. I'll see where it takes me, I just didn't want to waste their time. Hopefully I get a chance like some of the officers here that were still hired on...

I had to take one of the color tests for the dept I just got hired on... one of the plates had Nothing on it. (they told me it was to prevent cheating) almost alll depts will test for this now and their standards vary.

I'm in the same boat as you, I came accross this thread doing a seach for color vision, so I'm sorry to interject even though I'm not an officer (career firefighter/paramedic looking to get into fire investigations)

Anyhow. I went to an optomitrist about 2 years ago and tried these things on and hated them. They don't "fix" color blindness as I had hoped, they just allow you to see the numbers on the test which is unfortunate.

(plus I had trouble putting those things on my eye)

i believe there are 2 different tests, correct? the number test and the ishmara color plates? or something like that...

IMO i thought i had poor depth perception since the tests were damn difficult for me... either i had to look through the microscope or wear those funky glasses. i'd do well on the first half and then towards the end i could barely tell which circle was blurry.

this is a noob question since i don't know much about color blindness... if one was red/green color blind could they still see traffic signal lights? like the red light or green light?

The number test and the Ishihara test are one and the same.

About 10% of men are color deficient to some degree. Some worse then others. I am and see colors and lights fine. I have a hard time telling the differance between colors that are very close in hue to each other.

Hello guys! I just wanted to thank you for those who gave the positive feedback on continuing the processes. I got the offer today and I'm so excited! I guess it really depends on your department. I'm going to try my best to represent my department well and graduate at the top of the class.

I'll just have the fear if this ever is brought up prior to my probational period. I hope it really doesnt matter as I think I can see colors just fine and I have never encountered any problems with it other than that dot test.

Wish me luck!
