Hey all,

I will be testing for EBRPPD on Feb 3rd.... Any comments/insight into the dept.? I Am getting a degree in Wildlife Biology next semester and really want to be a Ranger; but there are no jobs (at least no acadamies running for state).... so I feel the EBRPPD might be a good alternative.

Some background: 31y.o., Sacramento metro area resident, Animal Control Officer, was a C.O. in my past employment, education pending, motivated, leader (like most cops-- type A)

Any info or help/perspective would be appreciated.

We've had several go over to EBRP. They have all come back. The $$ issue is a concern. Also the area that you cover is huge...radio reception is poor in most rural locations.

EBRP'S busiest days are holidays at the park...459 autos, 415's, 647f's, missing kids etc. No alcohol is allowed in the parks.

I would re check that again, as the State is looking for Park Ranger I positions to fill as well as State fish and Game Warden I positions; The East Bay Parks Dept are looking for POLICE OFFICERS-they are more "police" than naturalist/brush fire fighting Rangers so I think you need to really check into the dept,as they do regular police work, just mainly in a wilderness/parks setting( you should go on a ride along or two,as well as really talk to the officers) if you are looking for nature hiking and and environmental impact survey work, arresting drunks and taking guns from vehicle stops of oakland area knuckleheads may NOT be what you want to get into.

The federal gov't has several types of Ranger positions(BLM,Army Corps of engineers,Park Police, etc) that you may want to look into, and there are local county and city Ranger units that may fill your career interests (San jose City /county Rangers,Sacramento County rangers,Oakland City Park Rangers) but many depts are geared toward public safety/L.E/security more so than the naturalist/biology/zoology part of the job-due mainly becuase of the RISE in parks related crimes.More and more Ranger units are ARMED peace officers now than before. Check websites like PRAC and PLEA for statewide job openings and ,if you don't mind relocating, the city of L.A. is currently hiring Peace officer Park Rangers also, and you meet the requirement for hire with your degree-current pay is $44K to 55K/yr ;see http://www.lacity.org/per/exams/1966Sup.pdf

TY guys. I know the work is more LE but out in the parks. I still think that it would be good.

I am riding along with Sac Co. Rangers in 2 weeks. I applied to USFS for LEOI and they are reviewing my application. USPP--- don't get me started. I got the offer when I applied to San Francisco..... but the offer was for DC for a minimum of three years. I have apps in with the state positions. I just think that with my temperment and level of motivationthat I would be frustrated again by a dept. that looks @ law enforcement as seccondary or lower in the responsibility of its Officers.

Getting on as a USFS LEO is VERY difficult. You would not believe how many people apply for even a single opening. Knowing the right people always can be helpful in getting picked up for one of these slots. They have great equipment and deal with a wide variety of crimes in a nautral resource setting. The hardest part is getting through the front door...

USPP mirrors local/traditional police agencies more than any other federal police force. Most other uniformed federal police agencies have a security based mission as their primary focus with alot of manning gates and metal detectors. USPP is a true full-service police agency. They have all of the same units regular local agencies have from traffic units to a narcotics squad.

Yosemite or Yellowstone would be "fun" for a minute...Then I would be bored. Not bored of the scenery!

I am not familiar with the OPD Ranger unit... Are they peace officers? 830.2 maybe? 830.5? Limited peace officers?

The pay looks comparable to EBRPPD.

Still not enough pay to live in the Bay area, and work in hell.

The Oakland Park Rangers are comprised of peace officers employed by the City of Oakland.

Employed as a unit within the Oakland Police Department, the Park Rangers have access to state–of-the-art investigative tools and support.

The job anouncement doesn't say anything about P.O.S.T. I mentioned in a previous post about the Oakland Rangers. Years back I almost took a fleeding interest in the Rangers, lol. The pay wasn't enough and I wasn't very interested in living in the Bay area anyway. I spoke to some administrator about the job but I never asked about P.O.S.T. requirments because I already had a basic certificate. I do know they are armed, their dispatch is the police dispatch, and they have access to LEDS and DMV. I don't know what the patrol units look like though.

Oakland PD Rangers drive cars that are forest green and white instead of black and white like normal patrol units. Also, they seem to use a lot more Ford Explorers than Crown Vics.

Like their patrol units, their uniforms are dark green (much like Orange County Sheriff).

I've seen them doing traffic stops off park property so I'm pretty sure they're full peace officers.

NO CODE, have you ever heard of the Los Angeles County Police, under the office of public safety? They are park rangers. http://ops.co.la.ca.us/
