Guys-
Have any of you ever, or have any of your co-workers ever challenge CA POST to become a lateral from out of State or Federal agencies?
It says on the POST website that they "may" take the "FLETC Mixed-Basic" academy with one year of policing experience. My academy was MUCH more indepth than Mixed-Basic, so i'm thinking that I have a good shot. But I do realize that CA is VERY picky and I have had many friends come in from out of state agencies and have to head back to the academy.
Anyway, I'd love to hear of some success stories.
Thanks!

You send in what you have to POST, they will look it over for a nice little fee. They will then tell you you have enough training and experience, or you need ______ hours in this and ______ hours in that to qualify. Once you meet that, you send it back in, with another fee, and they send you the paperwork you need to take the 832 course.
NOT ALL AGENCIES will hire you with this method.
There is a list on POST that shows you exactly how many hours of training that you need in each area, you can do the math and save yourseld the fee and get all your ducks in a row if you are short hours on something.

Some agencies will make you go their academy regardless, like CHP.

Thanks guys, I'll check the website for the specific hours.
I got my PC 832 last month. Thats a step in the right direction I guess. I already completed two academies and simply don't want to do a third. I have some smaller agencies that I work with regularly that are willing to hire me once I get POST certified. So hopefully POST will give their blessing.
And ya, I know, the CHP academy is a stand alone deal. I know that agencies like LAPD will make you go to an add on academy either way as well.
Thanks again

If you go to the CA POST website and look for the Basic Waiver process you will find a PDF file that details the hourly training that you need. The minimum hours are @675 but you need 220 hours of specific training. You go through your previous departments training records and try to find the specific courses you have taken and match them to what CA wants.
I went through this process a year ago. I had over 1,000 hours of training and almost 3 years at my first department. They charged me $75.00 and who knows how many photocopies and gave me a letter back saying I was deficient in four categories for a total of 20 hours. Good Luck with your process.

It is not the 832 course, rather it is a different course which is specifically tailored for out-of-state officers who are trying to transfer their certification and California officers whose POST certificates expired. A local academy here in Southern California holds the transition course a few times a year. It is done at night/weekends and is around 140 hours total. Several other police academies in the state offfer the course as well.
If you are a seasoned police officer, especially from an urban area, which had a lengthy basic academy, there should be no problem getting approved for the course. As part of the process, you will also need a letter signed by your previous agency verifying your employment as a police officer and that your duties included at least one year of patrol experience.

That would be Rio Hondo that does the course.

Apparently through Santa Ana college at OCSD you can do the requalification course.
