How long does it take to get accepted into a police academy as a self sponsor?
A academy nearby starts in about 25 days I am considering applying, does it usually depend on the number of open slots availiable?
Is it pretty much like applying to a college? Plus a interview and a background check?

It starts in 25 days?
Isn't it a little late to get in now?

It really depends on the academy. I'm sure the academy your looking at would be able to tell you.

The only two that I know of (in my area) require you pass an admission test and physical agility test.

That's what Fullerton requires so if you were thinking that one then you are out of luck. I imagine their last test was in late Nov or early Dec at the latest.

Aren't you the same guy that we suggested just get hired somewhere rather then self sponsor? I even told you to PM me for a number to a recruiter friend that works for a department that hires quick and you never asked for the number. You just posted on the 18th that you were not going to self sponsor. You do realize that alot of departments (LBPD included) may hire you after you self sponsor and make you go straight into their academy all over again?
Anyway. This board is a great resource when you can't find the answer to something or need an opinion comparing departments but I really think you should make an effort to find out the answers on your own before you post up some question that could be easily answered with a 2 minute phone call.
One example: College of the Desert is just a college. Modular format. You register for class like anyone else and show up. No background, no interview. Some (Fullerton, Goldenwest) are run much differently. Make the call to the one you are considering.

You could also try Rio Hondo. They make you go to an information meeting and get fingerprints done so DOJ can tell them that you are allowed to have a gun. Like hbliam said, if you're going to ask for advice and have an avenue to receive it, take advantage of it. Don't be wishy washy because that trait can get you either hurt or fired if you do ever get hired.

Sorry for not contacting you i may have missed your post.
The reason I have been changing my mind is initially it looks as if I was making some progress with a department but as of now they are really slowing down in the process. I do not know if I will be choosen or not, on the other hand my military (reserve component) COC is coming down on me. They want to know if I am going to get hired or start an academy. I dont mind getting put on Active Duty again or even getting deployed again its just hard to start from square one. I do have a good relationship with my COC so they are giving me some leway to try and find a job .
This is why originally I took the advice of this board and decided to just apply like crazy, but now my CO is telling me "get something going now" he says I should should start the academy and then find a job while i'm attending.

Gotcha, well then, make sure when you talk to the academy your thinking about make sure they won't make you redo the whole thing if you have to drop out to go active duty. I believe Rio Hondo does their extended academy on the modular format so you wouldn't loose much if you had to drop in the middle.

I was in a self-sponsored Academy for a few weeks before I got my Dispatcher/Jailer job, and I can tell you its not so easy. The Academy itself isn't too hard.. It was at a community college for 20 hours a weeks, for 10 months. What was hard was working 40 hours a week, and THEN having the academy for 20 hours a week..some weeks 30 (like driving weeks/gun range weeks)..
Like I said, I was only in it for a few weeks, and dropped out once I was hired by a PD. The next time I go to an Academy, Im geting a sponsor! :)
Self-Sponsor academy are nice if you are able to work part time (living at home or your spouce makes decent pay), but if your living on your own, good luck!
