Since no one is responding I will. Maybe because it's obvious. Call only when he calls you and has to leave a message. Otherwise leave him alone.

I would call him/her and tell them that your mentor said to call once a week. Then ask him/her if they want you to check in weekly, or wait for a call.

It is simple, ask your BI what he/she expects from you. Rather than asking everyone else, you should make sure you are in touch with your BI. Don't be affraid of them, they are working hard to get you a job, as long as you are qualified.

I know that every BImay have a different way of doing things, but is there a general order in which they investigate? For instance, would talking to neighbors come early or would it be towards the end?
