Why was the day of the Corvette so much longer and glorious than the day of the Chevette?

What I'm saying is: it seems strange that a car company would do such a lousy job with smaller, cheaper cars that more people are going to buy than others that are much more expensive and fewer potential owners.

Simple psychology:
Chevette= Basic ride for poor people.
Corvette= Everyone's dream. Symbol of success, allegedly a "Chick magnet".

^ and profit margins. the chevette was dirt cheap to build and could be sold at a cheaper price at the sacrafice of a smaller profit margin. the corvette was more expensive to produce and sell, but had a higher profit margin. you sell more chevettes to make up for the smaller margin, but you only need to sell a few corvettes to make the same profit. it's still done today with the pontiac pursuit and G6.

In these days with retro cars being popular it would be nice to see GM bring back and updated Chevelle. If they do it right I imagine it would be a big seller.

I think atleast in appearance the new GTO was a terrible disappointment.

I think the new Corvette is one beautiful ride. A clear masterpiece. I like the fact they got rid of the pop up headlights.

Chevrolet has proven year after year they can produce a vehicle that is more advanced then the competition, but they only take it one step ahead.
If a person was to skip 84-87, the corvette design has been pretty much flawless. Now there are always problems with a new body style or engine. But never anything major with the vettes.

The new vette being the fastest production car out with 505hp is unbelievable. If you look at with the 415-z06 came out it was a ton of HP and handling to boot. So now what do they do, give it more HP 505 and tighten the suspension even more.

When the Viper came out in 94 they had a ton of HP and pretty good handling, crappy ride and unless your 5'8" and 150lbs you aren’t fitting in one.

Corvette said nice car, but we have comfort of ride, control and Hp for half the price.

Personally I believe Corvette will always be the classic "chick magnet" and "mid life crisis" car to buy for any guy (or gal)~!

Agreed, it looks like a larger Grand Am from a few years ago.

I think the Monte Carlo has been the worst resurrection. No wait....the Nova. Ugh.

Hey now!! My car is an 03 Monte Carlo SS. It is black with black leather. :D
It is going to be real sweat when I get some Foose wheels. The 90's model Monte Carlo is boring though.

I'd seriously look at a retro-'69 Chevelle! In the late 70s and early 80s, all of the auto makers were trying to compete with the Japanese, and basically they built junk until they got it right. There was the Chevy Chevette and Vega, the Ford Pinto, Chrys./Plymouth Aries and Horizon and even a cheap Cadillac. They were all terrible cars. I had a '77 Toyota that my wife drove until 1995!
