I am just wondering who is out there from any of these agencies and how much OT is available.
Also if you belong to Richmond and I can ask you a few questions please PM me.
Thanks

..Funny, but thats all I seem to hear from potential applicants or even recruits-" how much can I make?" true, we all wanted the job becuase of decent pay and benefits, but you'll NEVER get rich working behind a badge!! Even potential applicants to my dept comment,"I heard you can make $100K in your first yr"-what happened to the questions like "what does it take to make it thru the academy? what are the promotional opportunities?" what do I need to qualify as an officer?".Sadly ,alot of rookie officers are too concerned with making $$$ for their off duty life, and are not focussing on becoming efficient officers,or learning strong patrol skills(the avg officer with 1-5 yrs on my dept is working min.20hrs a wk VOLUNTARY OT) and never concerning themselves about the "Day" that mgm't cuts the OT "Slop bucket". Very few agencies have little or no OT( due to tight local budgets),and with the drop in applicants for the jobs here in CA. agencies have to pay extra for extra police coverage-I'm already at $100K + just with court and mandatory OT( AND PRAYING THAT I CAN FIND ENOUGH RECEIPTS TO USE FOR TAX BREAKS NEXT YR!!!)
Working an OT gig or detail is good "if" you need some extra cash,if you are on a cool special detail (DUI task force, surveillance /crime suppression, event security) but sucks if you are low man on watch and the next watch is "short" of warm bodies-it wears on you physically, mentally, and makes you a potential subject of poor decision making .OT is not something you look at to form your opinion on whether or not to join a Dept;sometimes joining a dept that has alot to offer(promotions, job activity, locations to work) is more important(LAPD locally is a "perfect" example of that, where they do not always give only cash OT as compensation to officers, nor do they give it without limits)

You forget DOACOP that we live in Socal. People who live in our area and the Bay area need to make enough money to keep from living in the ghetto *** areas that would eventually result in recognition and the problems that come with it. How much money for off duty activities is a part of stress relief and personal security.
Back in the day I almost took an offer from the Oakland Park Rangers but the pay was not good enough for the area to keep me out of lower class hoods. It sounds harsh but it's true. I can't work undercover ops because I obviously look too cop. Well, that and I wear Calvin Klein's "bacon bit's" cologne. Catch my drift? pun pun pun pun
Thats how I see the money issue. You get what you pay for.

I work OT to put food on the table, and keep a roof over our heads. I personally hate OT, I would prefer the mental health time to be truthful...
The reality is though, we are over worked and under staffed, and OT is just one of those things that is a by product of ineffecient hiring practices...

true,true- like i said ,OT is good when you need it- bad when its forced on you regularly(one of the sucky things about LAX is the "pressure" to work tons of just be here OT!).what my gripe is ,and has always been , is that people DON'T do the work they are paid for the OT!!!volunteer for a patrol assignment ,answer the damn calls !but when folks play hide and seek ... it only makes more work for the rest of the watch, and dept discipline comes down on everybody. My **** and moan is not about the bread earners keeping a standard of living but the "hogs"
who are only looking at fattening their checks.....

You have no idea what you are talking about when you state that the only reason that I am interested in OT is for money.
You have no idea what my situation is. I am extremely lucky to be in a position where money is not a big issue. Being a police officer is something that I have wanted to do for my entire life.
I am interested in OT stats because it gives insight into the department. OT stats are not published on the web sites of any of these departments and that is why I asked the question.
Thanks

What "insight" would that possibly give you???? Huh? OT is based upon alot of factors-during summer time ,large #s of officers are off on vacation-OT goes up;any emergency could make the OT go up( major labor disputes, public demonstrations/disturbances); size of the Dept could create the OT -many Depts are short on applicants and facing a near hiring crisis.but that doesn't mean that there will be OT in any particular form or shape within ,say 6 mos or even a yr from now !the only "insight" you could possibly get that would be helpful to you, is the insight you will have WHEN YOU WORK FOR "X,Y,Z" agency.working for a L.E. agency isn't like working Mc Donalds- the job is in flux ,and everyday is different-you can't just take a few stats and "figure out" what the dept is about.
as for my "opinion"- if it doesn't fit you -fine! But I see that question come up for too often, and it is ABOUT $$$;far too many applicants are concerned about how much they can make FIRST, then what the job entails second! If thats not you, then be happy...........
