Anyone on here work for this dept, or live in the 916 area who can feed me some info? Ive checked out there new website and watched all the proposal videos to the city council, and I must say, it sounds like they polled a lot of officers and asked what dont you like about your current dept. and took all that into concideration...
ie; 3/12 work schedual, new equip. rotating schedual to only work weekends 1/2 the year... Not to bad...
Thanks guys, Be Safe!

They look like an interesting agency! Before they started they sent their recruitment material to all of our district stations. I just could not take an actual pay cut to work there... That and I think I would get bored quickly...

Well, I grew up in the Citrus Heights area, so it'd be ncie to go back home. As far as a dept. decient pay, support from the community would be nice, and a dept that stands behinds its officers. ( unlike some departments... cough, cough...)
I like the shift schedual they put together, and the nice new equip. But Id like to see how they are in 2-5 years, if the pay incriments are still there, and Id like to see them go with take home cars.

The pay is decent for the new agency. I would think within the next three years, it'll go up some. In about five to ten years, the turn over will be high (people retiring - retirement from other agency, retirement from CHPD).
Right now, community and civic support is very good. Officers there for the most part really like it there.
what's not seen in the base pay are the incentives, i.e. int / adv POST, bilignual, degree, shift differential, speciality pay. the chief there seems very in touch with his personnel.
again, this agency is almost one year old. a good buddy from CoCoCoSO left to go there (taking a cut) and the other left Sac SO and received a pay raise... both love it there and have been trying to get me to apply...
they only have five (or fewer) openings left. surprising a lot of activity for CH (I thought it was a sleepy city... NOT!).
Give it a shot... Go out for a ride along. (write your trip off on your taxes too).

A C.I. gave me this intel on CHPD:
Issued Equipment:
Sig 226 .40 with Safariland ALS holster
Smith and Wesson AR-15 in every car
870 shotguns with beanbags
Taser on every belt
Everything else issued except for boots and underwear
Attitudes:
Don't apply if you can't be flexible. While the schedule is currently a 3-12 4-12 with an 8 hour day mixed in to make for 80 hours over a 2 week period. How officers will be picking shifts after the first year is up in the air. Admin seems to be afraid of using seniority.
The report writing system involves officers doing all of their own data entry in a rather cumbersome Records management system. Don't apply unless you want to sign on as a part time data entry clerk. Narratives are either typed or dictated over the phone at the officers discretion.
It's not Oakland or Richmond but the town is busy. I hear they sometimes do 200 CAD calls in a 24 hour period with less than 20 officers handling those incidents.
Administration:
My source says the place takes care of its troops. Perhaps they are focused on the big issues of getting the place up an running so they don't have time to be petty. Perhaps they are just good guys?
If anybody wants to get in touch with the recruiting sergeant send me a PM and I'll get you in contact with him. Last I heard there were less than 5 officer slots left and no more supervisor positions.
Sgt. Tom. You and I have some friends in common I'm sure. I'll send you a PM.

The growth potential for the city is limited as they are land-locked. Since this is their first shot at financing their own PD, they will be in for sticker shock real soon, that may take a bad turn on growth.
If you like the area, Sac PD has a lot to offer.
All depends on how you see your future. I wouldn't waste a lot of time comparing pennies, as that will certainly change for the better and worst throughout your career. Better to find a place that fits what you want out of your career. Think long term.

Out of State Laterals is not a standard set by an individual agency, POST mandates if you are a Lateral or not. Do you have a Ca. POST? If you have a Ca. POST, but have been working out of state, as long as your POST is still within the 3 year time frame, you might still be employable without any further acadmey requirements.

My CA POST was issued back in '01, so basically what your sayin is that if I get my CA waiver, I can then apply with any dept.? And its basically up to that dept wether or not I go through their academy?

I live near a Citrus Heights PD officer. He tells me the town is fairly sleepy. It is a landlocked "filled in" city so it won't really grow. Actually, from what I have been told, the officers do ALOT of traffic enforcement as the de-facto freeway from all the jobs in South Sac and Rancho Cordova to the BOOM BURGS in Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln etc is Sunrise Boulevard which runs through CH.
DeltaBravo404: what about Roseville PD? They are dying for officers. They recently closed and application period for 150 cadets to put through the academy.

I looked into roseville, rocklin, folsom, ect... However, Im not tryin to go through the wounder 27 week academy, for the 2nd time in California... =) Once for Sacramento was good enough, and once for Atlanta was just plenty. If the academy is more than 8 weeks... I gotta pass =)

Aggienut they arent looking to hire 150 cadets they took a maximum of 150 applications and will hire at least 1 and maybe 2 or 3 postions.

You are correct...sorry for the confusion. Per my conversations with Roseville, they have 2-3 positions and possibly as many as 10 retirements in the next 12 months...but all that is up in the air of course (laterals, funding etc). But they will have more. The department has doubled in 4 years and the population of the city is growing 33% in the next 8 years.
Sacramento on the other hand IS looking for that many....150 in training by July is their target. They are the most understaffed PD in the country among the 50 largest cities.

Just curious where you got that info from? Because I would seriously like to debate that... ha ha
Were 1/2 the population of NYC (4.5 mil) and have less than 1500 sworn. =)

since you have a CA academy prior (and probably a POST Basic from SPD), all you would need is:
3 week re-cert. and you're back.

The nice, understand, and cooperative people at POST said that after 2 years, your CA POST is expired...

It's strange that they would say that, considering the three week class is meant for prior POST certified officers whose certificates have expired (and approved out of state officers).
I wish I could remember the lady I dealt with at POST in Sacramento who got all of my stuff squared away. She was really knowledgable and called me back anytime I had a question...

You are RIGHT! My Dept-LAXPD ,hires officers with expired CA POSTs ( depending on whether they were "recent early retirees or went out of state to be officers) and sends them back to recert via the Orange county sheriffs Dept .The only way I could see a Dept(like LAPD or CHP)send you thru is becuase they are "specific" in their training or you've been out of L.E. longer than 5 yrs . www.lawa.org/police/ or http://laxpd.com

Go to post.ca.gov if you havent already...all the answers are there as far as POST certificates.
Here is an excerpt...
POST Requalification Course
This POST-certified, 136-hour minimum course serves two purposes:
1. Three-Year Requalification*
This course is available to individuals who have successfully completed a POST-certified Regular or Specialized Investigators' Basic Course, the Basic Course Waiver (BCW) process, or who have been awarded a POST Basic Certificate and have a three-year or longer break in service.
2. Basic Course Waiver Examination (BCWE)
After an evaluation has been approved by POST, this course may be completed to meet the examination requirements for the BCW process, which consists of written and skill components.
*Six-Year Exception: Individuals who successfully completed a Regular Basic Course (RBC), Specialized Investigators' Basic Course (SIBC), or the Basic Course Waiver process on or after July 1, 1999 but who never served in a position for which a Regular or Specialized Investigators' Basic Course was required by law, may requalify by completing the POST Requalification Course one time within six years from the date of basic course or waiver process completion. After six years, those individuals must complete the appropriate basic course (RBC or SIBC) to requalify, regardless of when the Requalification Course was completed.
