They took the first 120 or so....

I went in yesterday, too.

They might take the first 120, but they also pick minorities and women from further down the list. I got that information verbatim from someone yesterday.

That doesn't sit well with me. I think they should hire people based on how they test, not because of race or gender. I hope what you heard is wrong. It's not fair for the others.

I didn't hear wrong. BUT... if they are aiming to have, say, 6 women in each class, and there aren't 6 women in the top 120, then they have to pick from lower down the list.

It doesn't sit well with alot of people. It's not just police departments but fire departments, corporations and lots of businesses. In order to have a department that's representative of the community it serves, race and gender are factors. Get used to it.

It's not fair for the others.

To quote another officer on the forum..."Fair, you want fair? A fair is some place you go to eat cotton candy, ride rides and step in mokey $hit, this is the real world". - or something like that.

Then you get into the whole AA debate....underqualified women/minorities, lack of respect/recognition for "AA" hires, etc

It's true. Talk to the former Police Auditor and tell her your feelings. Better yet, call your City Council rep and Mayor and voice your displeasure.

Does any one know how long it takes to get through the
rest of the process? How long do the background investigations
take? Do they start the psych test or polygraph before those
are done? If the class starts in May, do they wait until
April to let us know who is in or do we find out sooner than
that?

Yeah, I know it's true. I just didn't want to get into that debate again.

After backgrounds, it is very fast. The rest of the process shouldn't take more than a couple weeks. There is a point where I took several days off from work. Backgrounds take a few months, so be patient. The polygraph will be done after your background is close to done....they ask you about things you put in your background packet. The psych test, and other stuff, vision, hearing, physical, is all done in a couple days, along with the TABE test. In my class, one guy I know got hired the Thursday before the academy started.....so, this could go right up until academy class. The conditional offers is when you will know. If you get a conditional offer, after backgrounds, then expect to be busy the next few weeks..

How do they choose the order in which they are going to do the background checks? What I mean is: After they get all the questionnaires returned, how do they pick who to start with? Is it just random? In order of rank? What?

Well. There are a few background investigators, don't know how many, but a few. I would imagine they go down the list, and when they are done with that one, they take another one.
Regardless of what they do, it really doesn't matter. If you are in the first group, you will have the first chance at getting hired. If they cannot find 40 qualified applicants, they will go further in the list, to get the required number. Like I said before, "BE PATIENT," This is the hardest part of the hiring process........waiting.
