Special Police in Maryland

Who are special police in Maryland? What are the scope of their duties and responsibilities? I noticed that the Marlow Heights shopping center has special police officers that are armed. I was told by one of the officers that they can make felony traffics stops, do radar enforcement, and write speeding tickets. I don't know if all of that is true, but it looks like a nice place to start, for what I want to do.

Anybody have any information on this agency, or special police officers in Maryland, just in general?

Special Police in MD are basicly Security Guards with Arrest Authority. An MD SPO CAN NOT enforce MD traffic laws unless they have been to a certified academy. If they have then they can enforce traffic laws. They have all the statutory arrest authority over misdermeanor and feloney offences that occur in their presence like any regularly sworn police officer. The major difference is their police authority is limited to the private property that they patrol and are asigned too.

SPOs do not

Have any off duty or off property police authority

Cannot carry off duty unless their handgun permit allows them too ( Yes they must have a seperate handgun permit to carry)

Have the ability to "lateral" to a "regular" police department as experenced ceritifed police officers

Enforce traffic law (unless they go to a certified academy)

There are several agencies in Maryland that do count being a SPO as experience.
