aahhh, high crime? Ahead of Compton ,Ca in the "most dangerous cities" listing! good luck-maybe you should post the question on the "local" section ,under michigan. From what I've heard ,its hard to get on in most Mich. depts do to low turn over............As beautiful as michigan can be,ever consider coming out west to L.A.(or so.Calif)?lots of openings everywhere...........

Ah yes Flint-town. Flint is 3rd highest in the nation in crime. They are also one of the lower paying departments here in the state. I also recently heard that their union filed a letter of "non-confidence" against the chief of the PD. So basically if your just looking to settle for any LE job than Flint is fine for you, but if you want to make a career out of a place then I would shop around.

I noticed today that they are accepting apps. again, due in April for an August academy. I applied for the Feb. academy....Are they hiring a ton of people, or do they have a high turnover rate due to pay/poor working conditions?

Pretty much my last response should have summed it up. I'm sure they are hiring alot of people if they want to run an academy or two. However, carefully re-read my last post and it give you an idea of the current state of things there. Now they also have a higher than average turnover rate. If you just want to be the Police and don't care where you work, then I'm sure Flint will suit you just fine. But if you want better wages and better working conditions I would go compete with everyone else for a more desirable department.

Yea I'm just worried that when I got arrested 4 years ago it's gonna bite me. Some friends got in a scuffle in a bar, we were all kicked out, and everyone was arrested by the officers that were hanging out in the parking lot. When the judge heard my case and that I wasn't in the altercation, it was dismissed in 6 mos. providing my record was still clean. I disclosed everything, I even went as far as to get a copy of my driving record and give it to them...just kinda sweating that stuff.
I'm hoping that they'll put some weight on me being a part-time...former full-time firefighter/emt, and deem me 1/2 way responsible...maybe notice I graduated the fire academy with good grades, and maybe trust me to do the same in their PD academy.

Here is the scoop about FPD. This is straight from the human resource department at the city. They are looking to hire at least 50 officers this time. They are having problems with the applicants passing the MCOLES reading and writing test and people having issues with background checks. Last check they had about 13 or so that were going on. The job function for these people will be to work a one man car from 7pm to 4am in the north and east ends of Flint, which are the bad areas. The mayor had a great plan to "deter crime" by spreading people out. They are going to pay you more but not provide health benefits. You will also have to live withing 20 miles of a city limit. The union and the mayor/chief have had issues and they just reached an "agreement". I am not sure if the way the mayor wants it to be will fly with the union. I do know that they need alot of people really bad. They might not pay alot, but you will get PLENTY of expirience. They will put you through the academy and pay you, but you will have to sign a work contract for a certain period of time. About 4 years ago or so, they city did not pay employees for like a month because they had no money. Things are better since the State of Michigan came in to run the financial aspect of the city business. I know some guys that work for FPD and they said it is busy and gripe about some of the same stuff that other PD's do. They think that the mayors plan is BS, and unsafe for new officers. They are currently trying to work things out to make the department better. Hope that helps.

...sounds like Compton,CA PD circa 1990 to 96 (before LASD took over).POA union and the mayor ,Omar (Gangsta') Bradley. no pay raise,Mayor interfering in operations, struggling to keep officers from leaving, and rampant crime from entrenched and violent street/drug gangs.but to make someone work under a "contract" and not provide health insurance(officer must have to pay out of their pockets as that could also screw the union if they stepped in to cover it)- even LAPD wouldn't do that.A contract is like an "indentured servant" clause,(particularly in a bad work environment, with poor rewards) and i tohught slavery was illegal ................

I turned my background stuff in for the Feb. academy, it's been like 3 weeks now and I haven't heard anything. Should I have heard something by now? I just figured they'd at least call me, parents, friends or something by now.

The people who run the hiring process are tore up from the floor up. I am surprised that anything gets completed by that city. Good street experience, bad place to throw out your anchor. My suggestion for you is to keep shopping. You will regret taking a job in Flint.

I've worked with Enviropig in the past and I trust his judgment. I'd take what he says about Flint to heart. That being said, good luck guys, I hope they don't throw you in the deep-end w/o teaching you to swim. No health benefits?

I work close to Flint and the officers there are pretty good people. DB unit is very good as well. Problems come from City Hall mostly. Mayor doesn't get along with City Hall and he controls everything in PD. I wouldn't work there.

Sooo.....I passed my written with a "B" on a ABCDE scale, I passed my physical which is pass/fail, but shows the scores on indv. events, with pretty high no's. I think I did ok on my oral, before I left the Lt. told me "we'll be talking to you soon young man, you did a very good job today", and then I got a letter telling me I passed the oral 2 days later.
They told me not to contact them, that if I passed they'd call me. My letter just said "congrats" and that the chief's office would contact ONLY those who he is interested in hiring...Do they pass everyone on the oral who doesn't mess it up, or only those they are really interested in? I hope to hear something soon....

They scale you by either a not recomended, recomended or highly recomended. I got a call from the department saying I passed everything and they were just waiting for the start date for the academy. It sounds like you did very well. Congrats and I hope to see you in the academy.

I'm a hard worker, I test high, have a good college GPA, and am a firefighter/emt.... I have a small scratch on my record in my youthful past, they failed my on my BI. I'm not really sure how to answer your question I guess. I would think that having high college grades and being a firefighter/emt would merit a good recommendation from a BI, but I guess not. I got a ticket when I was young for making "prank" phone calls, that weren't obscene or anything, and I have a disorderly conduct that was thrown out of court. The disorderly was four years ago, and I was asked to leave a bar cause it was closing time and we had been there drinking a looong time. It was a college town, the bouncer was following me out and I made a smart remark to him cause he was breathing down my neck; he then threw me out the door and 3 cops were just standing there by misfortune..It still shows that I was arrested though.
The BI I was assigned to actually bragged to me about how if someone were to "f---" with him when he were off duty, he would "pull his weapon and pistol whip that mother f-----". That came up in my interview because we were talking about off duty confrontations. I'm left with a very poor taste in my mouth from the events of my background investigation.
Everyone I spoke with in the city of Flint was very courteous, the guys in on my oral board were also really professional and helpful. The Sgt. performing my BI said I could call at ANYTIME if I had any questions. I called him after my BI to leave a message, and I told him I recieved notice that I didn't pass. I made sure I said in the message that I respect his decision and just wanted to know where I should strengthen myself because I'm sending myself to the academy in Sept. I called him several times, and he won't return my call....Like I said, everyone I spoke with previous to my BI was very professional....apply if you think you'll like it there.
