Well I have wanted to become a law enforcement officer for quite some time. I am seriously considering taking the plunge soon. However, I was convicted of misdemeanor theft when I was 18. I am now almost 34. Also I served in the military for 4 years and received an honorable discharge. I haven't been in trouble since I was 18. I also have 63 college credit hours. Am I just wasting my time or might I stand a chance? Appreciate any insights..

Yes you absolutely do. I am 34 and also have a misdemeanor on my record. I have not let that stop me. My advice is to just be honest about what happened on all forms and during meetings with your BI. Remember, that was 16 years ago. People change, mature and learn from their mistakes. Focus on finishing your degree and start applying during the last couple of semesters. One final note, Border Patrol is currently hiring and the cut-off is 40. Don't give up!

After that much time has passed most departments would not have an issue in my opinion. Good Luck!

You will be ok. Don't sweat it. Show how you have matured and learned ffrom the experience and you will be just fine.
