hi,
im chris and im 18. i had a conversation with my uncle about what i want to do with my life, job wise. and i said i would like to be a police officer or a customs agent/officer (because i live in SF, CA and theres a good amount of import/export ports) and the reason i said law enforcement is because i love guns. my uncle said that was a stupid reason to go into law enforcement just because i love guns but i dont know what else. he said, be a customs broker but i heard that was hard as h*ll.
i know this is a stupid question but i would really like so feedback, positive feedback. on, if i should persuade the career in law enforcement or other careers. it would be great if a customs broker can gave me some advice but anyone would do.
thank your for your time,
Chris

I don't think any law enforcement agency is going to want someone who wants to be a police officer because they "love guns"...how about you go join the military or something with that type of mentality?

i thought about the military but i just dont like how bush is running things right now, no offence. about the law enforcement thing. i dont want to become a cop just for guns but i always wanted to become a cop actually a member of the SWAT Team. not just because they carry guns but i like to help people. im a pretty big guy, strength wise, and i always defend the little guy because i also was picked on a lot when i was younger because i was small and then my teen years i just grew. so thats another reason i wanted to become a cop but my family is telling me not to become a cop because its dangerous and the pay isnt that good. wat do you think?
thanks

people get involved in law enforcement for many different reasons. some want to defend the helpless, some love guns, some thought it looked cool on tv, some do it because of tradition..trust me there are all kinds in this field like all others...its not all good but it is what it is...

This is my suggestion...
since you are 18 get a college education. take various classes until you find something you like to do. i would take criminal justice classes. alot of the instructors (i dealt with) are current or retired officers with a ton of experience and stories. your degree doesn't have to be in CJ but take some classes to learn about the system
2nd) if you are interested in law enforcement get a job in dispatch or a dentention officer in a local jail. you will learn alot about the job and the people.
good luck and stay out of trouble!!!

You don't like how the President is running things and that is why you won't join the Military? How is the President running things please tell me? I spent 13 months in Iraq how bout you?
I have bad news for you my young friend. You will also have to enforce laws you don't agree with. You will have bosses all the way from Chief to Sergeant that you don't like. Your above statement is EXACTLY the kind of thing I DON'T want to hear from the guy covering my back.
1. Your too young to be a cop in many areas. Most require you to be 21 years old. You have quiet a bit of maturing to do. There are only two groups of people doing CQB and SWAT type operations. One is the police the other is the military which you won't join.
2. Your sissy mindset concerns me. If you are unwilling/unable to clear rooms in Iraq what makes you think you can do it as a tactical officer clearing a meth lab?
You might want to seriously reconsider your career path. Your post does not exhibit the proper mindset of a trigger puller.

Please get some life experience, while I was interviewing for my current LE job I over heard a 19yoa female exiting the office and complaining that she wished that they would have told her that agencys do not hire 19yoa straight out of the academy before she spent all the money on school. Try the coast guard, they don't deploy over seas for the most part or the airforce. The most an agency is going to offer you is corrections(so you can gain life experience) unless your uncle is the chief or is personal friends. If the two above services are not to your likeing get yourself a 4-year degree and then you can at least be competitive with other applicants.

hate to tell you but we are deploying just as much as the others, esp certain career fields such as security forces

Based on your previous posts...please go with customs broker...please
. . . the reason i said law enforcement is because i love guns. my uncle said that was a stupid reason to go into law enforcement just because i love guns . . . He's right. There is a hell of lot more to LE, even LE that concentrates on gun crimes like ATF, than just guns. You need a whole lot more than an interest in guns to sustain you through a career in LE.

Don't bother with the other threads that were talking about maturity and stuff. Some people were raised with out respect. Anyways I was in the Army 2 years ago and now I want to join LE. Now from what I've read and talked and heard, the LE training is alot more harder than military. Boot camp or basic training seems easier than the Police Academy and I could name a few like I'd rather sing in the gas chamber than get pepper sprayed in the face and have to do a few tasks before you can rinse it out. More or less what you should do is see if you can join the Police Academy to see if it is truly for you, if not unfortunately you need to find a different route in life. Also it depends what city you live in cause you really don't use your gun that often. Mostly pulling people over for speeding, domestic violence, etc... Do some research. Knowledge is power.
