Hello all,

I know there is probably a post with this topic already but i could not find it. I am in the hiring process for ICE to be a special agent. I am in the end of my background investigation, i tested in dec. 2005. I have heard that they have nov and dec FLETC classes for this year and some people are starting to get final offers and duty locations. anyone in the same pool as me, or have recieved a Final Offer lately, thanks for your help in advance.

I wish I were far enough along to worry about FLETC dates...I just submitted my resume earlier this month, and am waiting for the PIN to come.

I do know, through the grapevine, that there is a class for Nov 27.

Anyone have any indication of any PINs coming in the near future? What's the general consensus on contacting more than one SAC for a PIN, good or bad?

Tested Jan 06, I have completed the entire process. Just waiting to be sent to training and scheduling and then a class date. A fellow officer in my unit has been in training and scheduling since July and has not recieved a final offer yet.

Hey all,
I realize noone has posted on this thread for awhile but I hope to apply with ICE in about a year. That said, I really would like to know what the competition is like. Would you all mind giving your profiles just so I know what I need to do to improve and what to expect. Here is my information:

- 4 yrs active duty Army officer: Field Artillery
- 2 tours overseas (on trip #1 right now)
- Double major: International Relations, History
- Spanish: if 10 is native fluency, Im a 7

Thats all I got for now. Id really like to hear back from others on this. If someone from anothher fed agency is applying as well, feel free to post your stuff too.

Hey hows it going? Here is my BG.

B.A. in CJ
4 yrs Insurance Fraud (SIU)
3 yrs CBP Officer

If you can, try to get some investigative experience under your belt. With your experience you should at least get a PIN # to take the test.

Anyway that is good to hear, I definetly want some investigative experience, so Im not putting all my eggs in one basket. We shall see what comes up.

Your background is enough to get you the job, I got it with less and have seen many others get it with less. The only thing I have that you dont is LE experience, but keep in mind I had no military and no foreign language, and no double major...

Sometimes the person who gets the PIN is the luck of the draw. Sometimes it is the person that knows somebody. Either way, like I said, you have plenty to qualify...

Glad to see the replies coming in. It is very interesting to see the wide backgrounds that people come from. For those currently in FLE how would you say things break down? I would guess most are former PD, some military, and then fewer straight out of college?

I would see if you can get it earlier, but from what i have heard they are not giving out pins till spring of 2007, which would push everone back in the year, b/c there are so many people in the pipeline that they need to push through. It has been rumored that there may be a freeze, but many ICE agents say no b/c their budget is big for 2007, so i would say a slight delay for newbies, but hopefully a big push for use in the Pipeline, I am just awaiting my phone call, i got my pin in dec. 2005 tested in jan 2006. hope this helps

What's up everyone. I received my PIN a few weeks ago and I am taking the ICE s/a exam in 2 weeks. For those of you who have taken the exam is there any feedback you can give me as far as the math is concerned. I took the FBI s/a exam a few weeks ago also, studied my *** off (gmat, fed exams books, etc.) started the math part and it looked like another language. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS I'm a newbie so if this is posted anywhere else I apologize.

I am taking the ICE exam this week and was wondering how many questions each section has? Also, has anyone taken the ICE exam and the TEA? Any comparisons there? I passed the TEA for ATF last year (the last time they gave it since the hiring freeze) and am hoping the ICE exam is easier than the TEA...

I have been trying to contact the ICE SPECIAL AGENT recruiters since August 06. I called Boston and received a recording that they had suspended recruiting until May 2007. I left a message and even faxed my resume to the New York Field Office but did not hear a reply. Today I spoke to the Newark field office and the recruiter there told me I had to apply to Boston since I am from CT. Once again I got the same message from Boston about recruiting being suspended. Sucks that I will not be able to take this test. The federal government is soooooooo slooooooooooooooow.

Anyone else encounter similar problems??? What can I do???

Well I just got my letter the other day letting me know that I passed the Phase 1 FBI s/a exam. All I can say is that i bought the ARCO books, GMAT book and used the study aid they supply, when it was time for the math portion of the exam I might as well have done the questions with a blindfold on. I have the ICE exam next week and once again I'm going through the same books hoping the math isn't as ridiculous as the FBI.

I just took the test yesterday… The math is not too bad. There are 25 math questions (you get 1 hr and 15 min to complete) and if you go by the study book they provide, you will be good. I know there aren’t many questions in that book, but just look for those types of questions in your other books. They don’t stray very far from that study guide in all three areas of the test. Good luck!

From what I understand, they're looking for 4 categories: military, LE, clearance, and education for acceleration on getting you a pin.
8 yrs military, almost 2 LE, high clearance and 1/2 done with a masters... anyone know if there's any truth to this? Should I contact a different regional office to get a pin or stick with where I want to work since that's where I started the process? Thanks for all the help... good luck to all!

Are you saying ICE has started a program like the FBI where they request you to fall under a certain category when applying, or they simply like to see those sorts of backgrounds?
Secondly, if you dont mind me asking what was your MOS in the military and the area you are pursuing for your masters?

I wouldn't get my hopes up that quickly. My buddy didn't get the call til 6 months after he was referred to the scheduling dept (even though the recording said 30-60 days), and I have been in limbo in the scheduling dept for about 45 days now. The best answer to that would be.....no. I have talked with people that have tried to do it. One of them turned down the TO to wait for another location and recieved a later saying his name was taken off the list. Might want to talk to them about that when the time comes.

yeah, I figured that.

I got offered a decent location, but far from home and it will be difficult to move the kids and wife there.

I wsa thinking of wating to go throught the whole process, and then try and bargain with them at the last minute. Probably will end up taken it anyway. If I was single it would be a very easy decision.

I have read on other forums of some guys were able to get thier home town at the last second because there happened to be an oppening.

You can ask the person who calls with the offer if there is anything available, but there is no gaurantee that if you turn it down you will ever get a call back.

Unless you are going to a prime location transferring later will be difficult at best. Boston is a hard office to get to. If you got Miami or something similar it may be possible but it will be a long road. In any event you must be at your first office for 3 yrs before attempting to transfer.

When the time comes and you do want to move you must find someone to swap with you...that is what makes it difficult. Once you find someone, both offices must approve the swap as well as HQ.

Wherever you take I would plan on being there atleast 10 years, unless you leave to do a tour at HQ, FLETC or somewhere else.

Good luck.

here is a little insight to locations...

my buddy was born in Boston, college down in FL, orlando, processed out of Boston SAC office, got Noglaes, AZ

another person i know, grew up in orlando, FL, college there, no LE exp. or CBP, and processed out of Tampa, FL (like me) and got offered Orlando, FL how crazy, does not even have to move

so bottom line is, there is NO way of telling, i could get tampa or timbucktoo, CA or TX or denver, no one knows, but good luck to all......

I know of 4 guys from my PD that tested in Seattle and all 4 got Seattle. When I first started the process, I called HR to check on my status before I was issued a PIN. They told me that after an oral board, the office director tells them if you've passed or failed, and if you've passed the director can request that you be assigned to his/her office, which they told me happened in my case. So even though I'd be willing to relocate, it sounds like I will be assigned Seattle or Tacoma. But I suppose anything can happen...

Only some agencies. As of now ICE doesn't run that way. But maybe the more experienced people, like jmat, can tell you differently. Doesn't seem like he's working that much since he's always posting on here.

What's going on jmat!? I assume the job is better then that last place you were working?

I work plenty and I only post here on my breaks...

And no, for the most part you won't move once you are assigned to your initial office. I have heard of people who were disliked and were forced out, but I believe that is rare...

Also, regarding transfers (that the agent requests), those are pretty hard to get, so I would assume that you will spend a long time in your initial field office...

After my oral interviews, there was no contact for about 3 months, then they sent me for my physical which for some reason doesn't include a drug test. Then about another 2 or 3 months later they sent me in for a drug test. About 2 months after that, they started my background which only took about a week. That was completed in October 2006. I was referred to the sheduling and training unit in late-December 2006 and have just been waiting since then.

It was just a medical exam. There is no physical assessment test for Criminal Investigators (don't know why though). My background investigator called me up out of the blue one night and then met with me the very next day to go over my background prior to him starting.

Not the best idea to be putting peoples names anywhere on a public forum. Don't think an Agent for any agency wants to be that well known. Might want to think about deleting that.

Yes I tested in WA. And Alaska falls under the SAC Seattle office. But I wasn't trying to "hold out" for a better offer. I just asked them if I could think about it since Alaska is such a crappy location. I honestly didn't think I was going to take the job, but when I called them after the weekend they informed me that since Alaska was such a bad location, they could offer me an alternative. I don't imagine they would do that for any other location though.

Is this a common response? The current website says to call the field office...am I missing something here?

FWIW, Ive heard from several people who have contacted offices that they arent hiring until may...

Congrats! Did u test and SI in WA? So...you can hold out for a better location...or r u a special case? .

Its a toss...
Some people I know have held out and got a call back with their first choice,
others I have heard of got letters saying their name has been removed from the list.

If I were you I would think about it real hard. If you turn it down, expect for that to be your last chance...

What is the main difference between being a S/A and a regular enforcement agent? I am looking to start the application process with ICE and can't find the info on being an S/A and when I call the offices its just a recording saying they are not hiring until the summer.

Not the best idea to be putting peoples names anywhere on a public forum. Don't think an Agent for any agency wants to be that well known. Might want to think about deleting that.

I agree, however, if he is the agent recruiter, chances are this is public knowledge. Which in turn one can find out simply with a phone call. If he is covert, which I doubt for ICE, then he wouldnt be in that position. But you can never be too cautious when it comes to op sec...

What has been the time between testing and interviews? I tested on Jan 9th in Chicago, got the "passed exam" package about early February. Sent it back two days after.

It was about 5 or 6 months between testing and interview for me. Plan on the entire process taking 1 1/2 to 2 years total.

Is the Oral Board for ICE in the same format as it is for BP?

I have mine coming up and trying to prepare as much as possible. I have passed the BP Oral Board...

They told me at the Oral Board not to discuss the questions or even the format of the interview.

Fair enough. Have you done the BP OB? If so, which did you find easier?

Thanks

yeah, they told me after the structured interview. Then I had the biographical one. I wasnt very high up at HQ...I was only an intern in fact. They got a good laugh at the interview when I told them I was only 22 years old...all in all, both interviews took about 45 minutes combined

I thought the BP interview was easy. I figured the ICE one would be more difficult. What ended up being your opinion on which was harder?

Thanks

Any ideas about how to obtain a PIN? I have called the local office and was told to check the website in May. The site says to call your local Office?! Any advice?

Just have to wait until they start giving them out again. As of now, they are not issuing the PINS.

I got my pin a few weeks ago and I am testing in Mpls. in September as well. I've got a few good contacts over at ICE and they (along with any news article I read about ICE) have been saying they will be pushing for more S/A's. I know it's redundant to say they'll be hiring soon-just like every other federal agency- but I think this one is going to be for sure. I don't know about anyone else, but I was PUMPED to see Math on this next exam. I took the IEA and scored a 96.4 and this test will include math which I love. Good luck to you all!

too bad the test is just pass/fail.. if you do well on the practice exam, it'll be a piece of cake.. good luck to you all. i heard they are also hiring more S/A's... but don't know the numbers. i just wish they could speed up the process like BP. :)

Got my pin today. Just wanted to know if anyone could give any advise on how to tackle this test. I am not that good at math. Does sitting down about 2 hours per night work with this guide?

the test is exactly like the practice guide they send you in the mail. it's pretty simple math, i believe. of course i have bad memory even though i took it this past january

Does anyone know if they are hiring for SA's in Texas? I tried calling the San Antonio field office recruiter, but just get an answering machine. I have sent in my resume via fax, but have not heard anything. Do you think I should try other field offices? Thanks for the advice/help.

OK I finally received a pin from Miami. I have a test date of 09/13/2007.

But here is the deal, I will probably be out of the country in Iraq with a private military company during that time.

I will proceed with my plans to go overseas and possibly re send my resume again.

Has anyone had any experience with a situation similar to mine? Wondering if I reschedule my test a month or two later.

I got my TO back in Mar. - April along w/ two other coworkers at the same time. Said theat we would have a city offered within 4-5 months. The packet stated that we needed to complete a laundry list of items; one being to go to e-qip and answer the questions and provide my information for my background. They give you the answers or a guide unlock YOUR packet but it was different then the instruction implied. All of us emailed the provided address and we all received the same info. We do not have to turn in the background packet (e-qip) because we are already in the system, dont turn in the fingerprints, and a few other forms. A month late me and one other, not the 3rd, received a nastygram that basically said, you screwed up, if this info is not received in 4 days you will no longer be considered. We go to the ICE website and the 3rd friend has completed next to his info and me and the other guy have pending.

Is there a specific format in which you are required to submit your resume in request of a PIN? Do you have to signify in your "objective" portion of your resume that you are submitting in reference to requesting a PIN? Any help is appreciated. Also, are you provided with a "wish list" in reference to which office you would like to be assigned. Thanks

who knows what they are looking for on the resume. i just sent them mine from usajobs and it worked, so i dont think they are looking for anything more than the basics. no, you do not get geographical choices with exception of where you want to take the test. you have to sign a mobility agreement; therefore, you can be offered any office in the u.s., take it or leave it.

This might have been answered before if so I apologize.. I test in September, lets assume I pass the test, at that point do they continue the process, boards, BI etc? Or is it a matter of need? I guess I am asking if I pass the test does that mean the hiring process begins and 6-12 months later (again assuming) I pass everything I will be offered a position?

HISTORICALLY, if you pass the test and then the interview, a job offer will follow anywhere from 12-48 mos later. however, i recently heard of a person that received a rejection letter after the tentitive offer. but it hasnt been the norm.

Yea, I just received my information packet after submitting my resume to my closest FO. They sent me a pin and instructions on how to register; however, when I go to the link provided it says that I have to wait until September 2007 to complete the on-line registration. So I guess I have to wait. I am hoping that the PIN I recently received works for the next recruitment cycle.

will you'll take the written test. wait like 2 weeks for the results. wait another 2 months for your SI/PI. if you pass wait another 2-3 months for a TO ( the stage i'm on) ...have you background/medical. get it sent to T&S in like couple months. and wait couple months to start the academy.

I start at the academy at FLETC June 18. I received my TO in May 2006 and my final offer June 2007. I was beginning to think they forgot about me. The total process was just about 1.5 years. Good luck to all in the process.
