Has anyone been seriously injured on duty? What happened and how well did you bounce back from it? I tore my ACL and suffered some meniscus damage the third week of the academy and ended up having to have an ACL reconstruction done. To compound things I had some complications with the original surgery necessitating a second surgery. Needless to say I couldn't continue in the academy so I was transferred to the front desk at one of the precincts until the next academy class. I'm fortunate that I've still got my job, seniority and a guaranteed spot in the next class (as long as my knee cooperates) and I'm learning a lot on the job that most other recruits don't know going in, but it's frustrating seeing as my class graduated Thursday and are now going through FTO. Seeing them all in the uniform and hitting the streets is tough. My knee is doing good and rehab is going well. I'm still not cleared to run but hope to get the nod this week when when I go to the doc for a follow up. I guess I just wanted to hear from other officers who've suffered an on-duty injury but was able to bounce back and continue their careers. Thanks.

Approximately 6 years ago I was involved in an accident while on a drug bust. Bad guy had 152 pounds of marijuana in the trunk. As a result I was drug down the entrance rap to the interstate. I was able to seperate from the vehicle and rolled some distance before stopping. I had reconstructive surgery on my right wrist and forearm. I had a steel plate in the right forearm after having to have my ulnar shortened. I had reconstructive surgery on my lower back. 3 discs were messed up pretty good. Also had reconstructive surgery on my left shoulder. I believe I have 5 screws placed in there. The shoulder was always dislocating before the surgery.
My Sheriff and his command staff treated me very well. The were understanding with the surgeries and alotted me as much time necessary for the operations and recovery. I am now back on patrol. I am no longer feeling like an 18 year old but the pain is much more manageable.
