Heyas,

As I'm sure all can tell, I am new to Officer.com. I am looking for some information, either on the internet or publication, on data/research done on extra jobs. I'm looking for information from the perspective of when is too much and what some other agencies/entities have done to address these issues, as far as General Orders and/or Policies. I know that somewhere, a study has been done on this at some point. I'm also looking for any case law or litigation resulting from, or influenced by, extra jobs in some way.

Any help in being pointed in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

DClaborn

Same for us, all OTor second jobs must be approved by the Department.

By the way, when is too much? when it affects your performance on the job.

PPD reuquires LEOs get departmental approval for all jobs & prohibits working at placees where alcohol is the main "product". The off-duty work permit states you agree the job won't affect the performance of your duties & that you'll quit if it does. In addition, on-duty supervisors are expected to stop & inspect officers working off-duty in their squad areas.

who insures your department? in maryland, many of the municipal deparments are insured by the same company (lgit.org) and follow the insurance company's "advice" regarding off-duty employment. maybe check with your departments insurance company or the county/city/town attorney and find out what their opinion is.

LAPD limits employees to 20 hours per week, on off-duty jobs. All off-duty work requires a work permit be it security, sell popcorn, real estate, actor or comedian. Any security work requires a California Guard Card...any work which requires a business license, woe unto you if you don't have one!
