Actually ALOT of people in law enforcement work for that, or even LESS. Taking 1920 hours (160 hours per month X 12 months) @ $13.58 an hour into account, that would equate to $26,073.60 (without overtime). That does not seem bad at all considering O'Neill is a very small rural town of around 3,500 people and you can buy a four bedroom house there for under $85,000. Overall the cost of living is very low, as such the $26K will go a long way.

On the flip side, take someone such as an FPS Police Officer, CBP Officer, Security Specialist, or other non-LEO scale federal job in Los Angeles. According to OPM pay scales, a GS-7 in Los Angeles would start at $38,443. Factor in the average house in Los Angeles County costing $600,000 and gas at $2.50 a gallon, not to mention everything else overpriced (insurance, groceries, taxes, etc.) and that $38,000 goes far less than the $26,000 paid to a small town PD officer in Nebraska....

I cleared 30,000 by a long shot last year. I rent a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, full basement apt with my girlfriend and only pay 335 a month. On the state pay scale we are well within the top 10.

I live in Socal, so everything is high priced. If it weren't for a take home car, I would be spending a large chunk of my paycheck on gas. Then again, my check goes other places. Right now over $20,000 per year goes toward retirement. But that is going to keep me from having to find a second job when I hit mandatory retirement at 57. :D
