This must be the least talked about agency on this forum. Why is that? Did I miss something? I'm thinking about applying and looking to talk to others about the process!.................anyone?

The KSP requires an applicant to have a MINIMUM of 60 college credits or two (2) years of previous law enforcement service. This again is part of the minimum requirements needed just to be able to pick up an application from them. They are able to pick carefully from those who apply so most cadets have four years or more of college behind them. I've seen former Navy Seals, military officers and pro level athletes come before the interview board and not all of them survived the hiring process.
The biggest disadvantage the KSP has in drawing interest from qualified persons is the fact that you might be assigned ANYWHERE in the Commonwealth (from Monkey's Eyebrow to Majestic) upon graduation, while candidates from Louisville or Lexington can be assured of not having to relocate if they sign on with their local departments.
The reputation of the KSP within law enforcement circles is, and always has been, excellent.

The KSP has alright benefits, but the pay isn't the greatest. There is rumor that in the next couple of years there will be a substantial pay raise for all troopers. The reason that alot of officers choose Louisville and Lexington over KSP is that the KSP process takes alot longer to go through. Many officers I have talked to started their application process with KSP and Lexington and/or Louisville at the same time and the 2 cities always gave them a job offer before state, so they took it because they needed a job. The background investigaton with KSP is very extensive. I have friends on KSP that had every roomate, neighbor they'd ever had interviewed. THe KSP academy is very rigorous and much more militaryish than the DOCJT, Lexington, or Louisville academy. The department is a very reputable and respected department. They do alot of patrolling on the interstates and also help out counties with insufficient law enforcement resources. It's not uncommon for small counties to dump all the bs calls on KSP because they are "busy" with other things. It's also not uncommon to have long response times. Despite all these things, I have never talked with a trooper that didn't love the job. As far as the relocation goes, according to the troopers I know, you will get your first or second choice 9 out of 10 times. However, they're going to put you where they need you. Hope this helps provide a little insight to the KSP. If you have any other questions, just reply to this thread and I'll answer the best I can.

troopertobe, now we've got a thread on KSP. I called HR today to get the scoop on the current hiring process; it's still tentatively set for June 07, with no guarantees. I've been in the process since August 05, yes it has been a long time, but I keep my mind on the gray. I have a good friend who works for Lexington PD and loves it. I don't have anything against Louisville Metro or Lexington, I just don't want to work in the city. To me the wait is worth it. I guess one of us could create another thread for the current hiring process.
