Whether gun or knife, handmade or altered, what are some of the strange weapons you discovered during a search?
Found a .22 zip gun on a fifteen year old. The workmanship of it was beautiful. He had made it at his dad's machine shop. His dad, a professional metal worker was extremely proud of his kid for making this. He was somewhat less proud of the fact that the kid was carrying it concealed, and was charged with it.
Dad wanted the court to order my department to give the gun back to his son.
Didn't happen. :D

The ones that we can easily take for granted are, #1- an ink pen that when pulled apart left a 3 inch serrated blade, and yes the pen did write. #2- an umbrella with a handle that detached and exposed a 6 inch thin blade. Also, a ball-cap with lead in the rim of the hat that when used made an effective " Thumping " tool.
Had a wooden shank carved out with a tight point and 4 fish hooks lashed onto the shaft with the hook tips facing away from the tip of the shank so that when it was pulled out the hooks caught on the flesh and ripped it more. Took it off a 13 year old kid.

A cut-down .410 gauge shotgun barrel, mounted into the drivers side door panel of a 68 Chevy Caprice. When the door is opened, the barrel is facing whoever is standing just to its rear. Activated with a short length of fishing line. Found while searching the car which had been chased onto Fort Lewis, WA from I-5.
(Bikers).

Frogman,LOL...
That story reminds me of an Officer that I used to work with...
One night we were executing a search warrant on a vehicle, when I hear him say "What in the HELL is this". I turn and see him holding at eye level with both "un-gloved" hands a "Duel-Sided strap on Dildo".
"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS"
I start laughing so hard, I have to fight to tell him.. " It's a strap-on dildo set".
Not believing me he continues to examin it,..." No.. Really what is it"..
I finally get him convinced, and he throws the thing down...begging me to promise, not to tell the other guys in the P.D about it..I PROMISE of course.
I live up to my promise and never tell the guys we work with.....I call a good friend who is with the Highway Patrol, and tell him the story..... :D
Needless to say he wears gloves now :p

When I went to the River Run in Laughlin a certain "motorcycle club" was selling a neat thing that clipped to the end of the brake or clutch levers on a motorcycle. When you pull down really hard, it releases, and becomes a nasty leather whip with a heavy metal clip on the end. It is usually braided with "Motorcycle club" colors, and looks like a simple decoration. Brought to you by the same friendly folks that brought you the motorcycle grip modified to fire a shotgun round at an unsuspecting copper.
I've also seem a hand held flair gun that was able to shoot a single 12 gauge round...Very ugly.
Recently I took a pellet gun that some moron was carrying with .22 long rifle rounds in it. I couldn't believe it, but the way he had it done, it actually fired!!!

I have found a number of weapons ranging from blood filled syringes to kitchen knives taped to the end of broom handles to use as a spear.
One officer found a one shot gun shaped like a lipstick.

LAWNMOWER!
That's right a LAWNMOWER one of the handpush types with the large heavy roller. Upside down with the handles secured to the wall on brackets and the body held into place with a peg. Attached to the peg was nylon cord which ran throgh keepers up the staircase and into a bedroom. I saw it as the team went in through the front door as it was mounted above the door. The bad guy who luckily wasn't at home simply pulled on the rope releasing the peg and the mower would swing down decapitating whoever was coming thru the door imagine getting a gobful of that!
On the way out everbody stood clear and I gave the cord a tug this thing swung down ripped the brackets off the wall and disappeared out thru the front door

The only "odd" thing I have come across was a subject who had a knife built into the buckle of his belt. A quick flick to release it and pull it out to the side (3" blade). Good thing we take a prisoner's belt when booking them in. We never noticed it during his pat-down search, but found it when we booked him in.
Funny, he never told us about it when we asked if he had any guns, knives or weapons on him. I wonder why not?? Hhhhmmmmm.....

Do you have a process that allows you to keep these weapons (after they are no longer needed as evidence)and forward them where appropriate for training purposes?

In the case of the hidden belt knife, it was under the legal length (4 1/2" blade) so it was not confiscated and concealing a knife is not an offense (same as having one in your pocket). The belt was given back to the subject after his release.
Any illegal weapon that is taken is held until the court case and then destroyed or the department may make a request to retain the weapon for departmental use (one local PD confiscated two MP5's with illegal length barrels, lucky PD got to keep them).

I believe that as long as they were found in a search, and not used in the commision of a serious crime such as a homicide, we can petition the court to release the weapons back to us for duty use or training.
