Had a run in today with a goup of 4 families who had landed on one of our service areas.
Basically the kids had been thieving from the shop.
As we rolled on to the car park to have our meal ( one of the few perks of the job ) staff members were on the car park having chased them out.
They had gone to ground in a large area of undergrowth at the back and we couldn't find them.
When the men folk returned in their brand new £60,000 camper van it all got a bit heated.
It was only when we threatened to get a dog handler out to search that they finally saw we were getting seriously hacked off.
They agreed to pay £50 compensation to the manager and he was happy with that and the fact they had their marching orders.
I know I'm venting my frustation alittle hence the length.
I seem to be dealing more and more with the travelling community and boy do they give anyone with an irish accent a bad name here.
It seems they are only goood for lying, cheating and theiving.
End of rant share your feelings if you wish!

The area which I work (in YM land) for has the pleasure of a large permanent travellers site, they are not all pleasant souls as they would make out and are responsible for a good proportion of the crime that we have.

All of them are in it together and will give each others details when caught so the system is in a mess as to who is who! Thankfully with the introduction of Livescan to every custody block that will end and we might start putting them inside.

I've been on duty when the following job came in on the CAD system "30 People fighting with knives and guns and weapons, i've heard gunshots and there are people running everywhere, some with blood on them" Fantastic I thought, not. Thankfully no-one got seriously hurt and several were arrested after coming face-to-face with angry police dogs and the H&K MP5's!

They have a lot to answer for! Don't even get me started on distraction burglaries..

Travellers? Stealing? What a shocking accusation to level against the Irish Travelling community. Six months of extra diversity training for both of you.

I have seen the movie Snatch. By "travellers" do you mean pikes or gypsys?

I know it is sad that they only way I can relate is to refer to a movie, but it's all I have to go by.

I familier w/ Gypsies from my European travels in the Navy but the only thing I know about Travelers is what I've seen on tv which of course isn't very much. I tell ya what, those gypsies are good at stealing though. They got a couple of my buddies good with some sleight of hand, a radio and a couple bags of salt right in front of the Vatican.

You can't call them pikeys or gypsies anymore, as apparently they're a minority ethnic group and it's offensive to them. How exactly living in a caravan and thieving makes you an ethnic group I'm not sure...

That's the one. However, Irish Travellers (who tend to get called pikeys rather than pikes) are a distinct group from Romanies/gypsys. Obviously the way Brad Pitt and pals speak in Snatch is a little exaggerated for comic effect - if Travellers really don't want you to know what they're saying, most speak a language based on Gaelic and other stuff, which they can slip into.

I take it from your comments that there aren't a lot of Travellers on the West Coast. There are certainly a number living in the US, where I gather they are best known for roofing and driveway scams (also a favourite over here). I also seem to remember seeing an episode of Law and Order about US Travellers, which was hilariously wide of the mark unless their US cousins are completely different from Travellers in the UK.

It turns out that there was a big fight betweeen travellers and the locals in the tamworth area yesterday.
End result 3 caravans lost due to molotov cocktails, 11 arrested after travelllers retaliate by running over local man, THREE times!
All this over a bare knuckle fight with £5,000 pot,won by the local man and payment declined by the travellers.
Just another quiet night in rural England!

Sounds like SNATCH 2 to me! lol

I love that movie, but I never had any trouble understanding Brad Pitt at all. A little slurred, and somewhat short in some words, but understandable none the less.

Pikey bare knuckle fights. Who would have thought.

Do I get it right?

Those "Travellers" are one group of the "Gipsies", like the bigger groups of Roma and Sinti, correct?

In Central Europe we basically deal with Roma or Sinti (they also tend to steal).

[...]Those "Travellers" are one group of the "Gipsies", like the bigger groups of Roma and Sinti, correct?[...]

Well, there are several unrelated groups in the Europe, which are considered "nomadic".

"Travellers"/"Pavee" ("pikes", "tinkers") are of Irish origin, their language is similar to Gaelic.

"Roma" ("gypsies") are of Indian origin, their language is similar to northern Indian languages.

"Sinti" are Roma families/clans which live in the German speaking part of Europe since around 1400 (i.e. edict of Emperor Sigismund). There are similar "national" groups of Roma worldwide (e.g. the French "Manouches" or the Spanish "Gitanos").

"Jenische"/"Yeniche" are of Middle European (possibly Celtic) origin, their language is similar to Celtic languages.

"Mercheros" ("quinqui") are of European (possibly Spanish) origin, their language is similar to Catalan.

Travellers in the UK are mainly Irish.

A horse fair in my police area cost the tax payers over £200,000 to police due to the law abiding nature of the visitors :)
